Man this cool down had me thinking someone would knock one down. Finally felt like fall here in the midwest.

She reads the script perfectly and comes into what I now know is 30 yards. I remember putting my 30 pin on her and letting er rip! Arrow went just a touch over her back!
I’m okay with it, it just felt awesome to get that adrenaline rush and have action on my very first sit of the season!
Here’s to hoping a buck takes the exact ditch funnel down into the corn fields as she did!
The same exact scenario played out for me tonight. Except I didn’t let it fly hoping for a buck. I think the doe and fawns were wind bumped by another hunter. They came in fast but kinda just waited by me to see if they were followed.

Sat an apple tree on public and had small doe come out and hang out for too long. After watching her for 20 minutes I took a 20 yard shot and double lunged her. She went 40 and kicked over. Now I have some fresh meat.

The two does and a dorky buck bounded off and came back 2 minutes later. The lead doe had me pinned and came to 15. I had no opportunity to draw. Meanwhile, the buck was making a scrape and the second doe came to 25. Nerves got the best of the boss lady and they all left again.
10 minutes later a little spike walked 7 yards I front of me.
I could have shot either of the bucks but wanted to shoot the does.
Sounds pretty awesome! Have you ever killed one from the ground?
I’ve never even come close from the ground.
Congrats muddy and Jr! Good shooting.
I hunt, I fish and I sing guitar solos in songs.

All you saw were nice tender backstraps. Probably would've done the same

Congrats to all the killers!
After getting frustrated with property lines. Went to a plan C or D or Z...whatever plan I'm on. Anyway, I'm very optimistic for Thursday on. As confident as I have ever been about an elk hunt. Have a bunch of crap to do tomorrow, so tomorrow is an off day. Hitting it HARD Thursday through Sunday.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Had an awesome first sit of the year! One of my more action packed days on public land.
Going back from my last post, I missed that doe. 40 minutes later I had a doe run by the stand. I managed to stop her, and squeeze off a 35 yard shot at her while she was quartering away. Just as I released she turned and I stuck her in the but! Knowing that I made a bad shot out a damper on the mood.
I decided to let her die and bed down somewhere, and not go after her, plus I had 1 hour or so of daylight left.
I ended up having a small almost 4 point buck walk right by my stand and another doe as well. I just sit back and watch them, soaking it in. Felt awesome to be successful on the first real hunt of the year.
Getting down from my stand I look for blood and find nothing. I end up grid searching and somehow someway I find a spot of blood, and end up finding a blood trail.
Tracker her down 80 yards later and she’s dead! Shot her right through the hams, and what looks like into one lung. About 24” of penetration. So glad I found her! Awesome start to the season.
I left all my stuff and came back in the morning for another sit, so here I am now just waiting for a buck to appear.

Nothing came out. I decided that I had to go see if anything had been bedding there recently. If I blew the spot, oh well. I needed to know if that deer was there or if he is there in a different part of the season. The wind was right, cover was right, but to my surprise no fresh bed. I am now convinced this is a rut spot. Really thick nasty tangle behind him, but couldn’t see too far ahead. I remember in spring you could see to the bottom of the hill. I’m glad to have educated myself more on the spot whether it meant blowing it or not.

You know it’s a done deal when the arrow looks like that! Congratulations

Small spike and 4 point buck walked by, out of the next draw over. As I was typing this I looked up and seen a third small buck. Another spike.
All out of range but fun to watch through binos
