Re: Live from the field 2021
Left school a little early today to get to PA. Still trying to fill my archery doe tag. The wind is swirling on me some, so my hopes aren’t super high, but I guess you never know. Sitting on a transition from bedding to a crop field that is about a half mile away. I climber a tree roughly 175 yards from the bedding area. That’s about as close as I can get with the woods being so open.
Anything worth doing, is worth over doing.

Re: Live from the field 2021
Been doing some trapping
2 coons on Tuesday morning
1 this morning
This is just behind my house, we have a major raccoon problem. Only have 2 traps right now, I’m just kinda getting my feet wet. Going to go after some beaver this weekend.

Re: Live from the field 2021
Beautiful afternoon today. Swinging from my saddle again, trying to get on a dang doe. Lots of people in the woods with it being so nice out. The first two places I wanted to go already had people on them, so I went to an area that I haven’t hunted for a few years, but found a pile of sign in when I scouted in last winter. Looks to be quite a bit of deer sign in here again. So, fingers crossed.

Saw a one horned forky chasing a does yesterday evening. He was hot on her tail and grunting like it was mid November. Pretty cool to see this time of year.

I am up at my buddy’s place for the last weekend here in pa for flintlock season. Yesterday we got a quick sit in and saw a couple doe out of range at last light. Today, we are going to be doing drives at multiple properties. We will have 16 guys so it should be fun. Hopefully we’ll be able to put a few deer down.

Re: Live from the field 2021
Still have a buck tag left to fill before Jan 31. I’ve learned to LOVE hunting this late in WI! Almost seems as if the deer know most have hung it up for the year so they’re very visible again and pretty easy to pattern.
Reminds a lot of Sept hunting.
Going out to check on a buck today i almost connected on in early Nov who has a bed behind a lone cedar tree on the edge of a small cattail swamp in a nice overlooked spot. He’d be dead if he didn’t move at 2:05 Nov 2 as i JUST climbed the tree and wasn’t even set up. My bow was on the ground still when i looked up and saw him coming around that lone cedar WAY early! All i could do is quietly watch him slide by me on the trail that took him broadside at 12 yards, the trail i set up for! I thought about trying to pull my bow up quick but he just got in tight on me so quick i figured it would be best to just go unnoticed. But so close!
Maybe i catch up with him again. I’ve not been back there since the day after that as I figured he was on to me. Fresh snow this morning so should be a great day to be out poking around!

Getting ready to head north to PA. I'll be getting up close to a feeding area somehwere, just depends on where the other hunters are at. weather should be good for early movement, which is why im going to get a little closer to food, than bedding.

Re: Live from the field 2021
Well, I was finally able to get a doe killed this past saturday. I slipped in closer to bedding than I had intended, and sat through a few snow squalls. Right at dark, a group of does came out of the the bedding and walked right down the pipe. I was able to put and arrow right through bot of the lungs of the lead doe. It was a great way to end my season.

Re: Live from the field 2021
Saturday was my last day of the year. We had 12 guys to do some drives with the flintlocks. We had a blast. We seen deer on every drive. We unfortunately had some misses and guns not going off but we’re able to fill some doe tags. Now onto winter/spring scouting!

Re: Live from the field 2021
Kayaked into a hard to reach spot of public, pulled 2 cameras on the way and changed batteries in a 3rd and was fixing to climb a tree when I could hear something rustling in the leaves. After listening for a second I determined it had to be hogs, so I started slipping towards them, managed to get one in an opening at 35 yards and made it count
