Highway Spots

Unread postby Wihunter95 » Thu Oct 01, 2020 1:26 pm

I've been struggling to find sign so far this year. So I started to think outside the box and had a thought. Has anyone seen good buck action with a spot right by a freeway?

Yes.. the idea that you must be “a mile” off the road is 200% false

That I know. I guess I've always thought that the excessive road noise would bother them by taking the sound advantage away

I’ve found some nice sheds from the highways and found a lot of deer watching them cross the road. One of my favorite beds is 15 yards from an interstate.

I have a great spot probably 20 yards off an interstate. Full of does. Seen some nice bucks chasing in that field the last couple years. Hoping to take a nice mature one from there this year. The noise doesn't seem to bother them at all

There’s a strip of swamp I drive by everyday. It’s tag alder and such but here or there you see a big tamarack. Nearby is an area of oaks that gets hunted quite a bit. I noticed there were a couple oaks right up by the highway. I walked in and there were beds under the big Tamarack trees with old rubs from last year. That spot offers everything that is available in the surrounding area I just think nobody molests those deer because hunting 100-150 yds from the road, 70 yds from a two track, 200 yds from a house just don’t seem right.

I remember a video that John Eberhardt had where he hunted right next to a highway.

I've had decent success by highways. Traffic noise can be irritating at times though but doesn't seem to bother the deer.

I have hunted near roads, and its annoying that you can't hear deer coming, but on the flip side they can't hear you either.

I killed my biggest buck from my home state last year he was living right next to a major highway like 15 yards inside the tree line.

I have found many bucks over the years doing the same thing.

They use the highway like a barrier to protect their downwind side. See it a lot in Massachusetts

I’ve only scouted around one once, but the most defined deer trails in the area were located just inside cover right along the highway.

I know a guy who hunted a median strip of dense cover and got buck every year. I just never had someone who could drop me off 3 hours before light like he did lol. There are miles and miles of it he had to himself.
It's all fun and games till someone looses an eye..... then its just fun

I’ve scouted a median before. Had sign in it but too small of an area to hunt
