Guns driving through Illinois
I'm going to be driving from Michigan to south dakota to bow hunt soon and want to see if anyone can shed some light on driving through Illinois with guns. I've heard people talk about how they avoid Illinois due to gun laws but I'm not well versed on what you can and cant do. I have a cpl in Michigan and would like to bring my handgun with me on this trip, I'm also bringing a shotgun to squeeze in a little pheasant hunting as well. Can I even drive through Illinois with a hand gun and a shot gun? What's the laws on this?

Just unload and case them up properly and drive on through.

Indiana resident. The current protocol for Illinois is that you may carry your concealed firearm within your car, but any time you leave your car it must be unloaded and secured according to Illinois transport law. If you don't carry on your person in the car, it is probably best just to lock it in a case unloaded. If you can minimize your stops in Illinois, you can avoid the effects for the most part.

What's the transport law? Unloaded and actually locked in a case with a lock?

Unloaded, locked in a case with a lock, separated from ammo.

Look up NFA... National Firearms Act signed by Reagan. It's legal as long AS YOU DON'T STOP IN THE STATE. Firearms need to be locked in the trunk. Ammo separate. You need to be able to legally possess in both your home and destination state.

Hold up.... if I were to hunt Illinois on a muzzleloader tag, I have to have my muzzleloader locked in a case at all times that I’m not hunting??

That is the law as I remember it also. For crying out loud, a bow needs to be in a case as well

Sounds like infringement to me.

Illinois resident here.
It does not have to be in a locked case, it simply has to be in a case (even a gun sock will do) or made inoperable, and has to be unloaded. Same thing for bows, but you can put a lock around the string and cable making it inoperable as an alternative.

Bowhunting is not for the faint of heart. But fortune favors the bowed.

Re: Guns driving through Illinois
Thanks for all the info guys. I think I saw something posted here before where you pick a state you hold a concealed permit in and on a map it shows what states honor it, does anyone have a link to something like that?

Would you expect anything else from Illinois? haha
Good to hear that the lock is not required, as that is what is commonly suggested in the Indiana pro 2A groups I'm in.

I live here - thank God the deer hunting is great! Case them up and it won’t be a big deal.
