Tips or tricks to stay warm this Rutcation

Unread postby RookieBeast2019 » Thu Oct 31, 2019 4:02 am

Any tips or tricks?

I usually bring extra clothes and hand warmers.

Dress in layers but I always walk in with the least amount on.

Body warmers over internal organs
Put some insulation on top of your stand platform - even an old towel will cut down how easy it is for metal to transfer heat or cold - metal is a conductor
Change into dry socks before climbing up
A neck gaiter is worth its weight in gold - as is a good windproof hat
Bring hot soup or coffee in a thermos if you will be out all day - warms the blood and spirit
think about how good it will feel dragging that brute back to the truck
bring a GF and hunt from a popup blind ;) - whole new meaning to rutcation

If you have time, take a warm shower before hand. Walk in wearing only a t-shirt and your pants, shoes and socks on. Don't rush and get sweaty. Throw the rest of your layers on at the stand. Set your stand up before getting fully dressed.

Never tried it but my dad always told me to spray deodorant (anti perspirint) on the bottom of my feet so they don’t sweat.

Never been good at listening to the guy..

I gained 20 lbs in the last 10 yrs. I’m not very big but I don’t get near as cold these days.

Another aspect to keeping warm is to keep your internal furnace burning by nibbling on healthy snacks. I like a trail mix with some dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, & seeds. I find when I feel my energy falling and the chills starting a few hand fulls will lift my spirits and take the chill away. You may not realize it but when your on stand and fighting the cold your body is burning energy to help keep you warm, so it's important to feed your fire throughout the day with healthy snacks in addition to the lunch you pack in.

Wind proof clothing changed the game for me. I cover my feet in antiperspirant on really cold days. Hand warmer muff. Hats are a bit tricky for me, the hear a deer vs frozen ears debate. Usually I'm pretty good until it gets in the single digits or teens with higher winds.

Used to always get cold feet. I stopped wearing more than one pair of wool socks over my polypropylene liners and I never put my boots on until right before im heading into the woods (used to wear them in the truck on my way to the hunting properties). Now I rarely have cold feet.

Hand warmers and toe warmers are good but for me the Thermacare back wrap is essential. It goes right over the kidneys which filter your entire blood supply several times an hour. For me it is a must have as the hardware I have in my back seems to draw the cold damp air in.

Think beyond wool. Alpaca, Bison, and musk ox yarns are warmer than wool. I have a pair of buffalo wool socks and they are noticeably warmer than my merino socks.

Polypropylene socks provide a thin wicking layer between your feet and your wool sock keeping your feet dry and it’s a good place for a tow warmer. They are inexpensive and very thin so buy a few pairs.

Warm drinks and food are a great way warm up and extend your time on stand. During the gun seasons I carry a small backpacking stove, JetBoil Flash, to make hot water. It weighs less than a Thermos and is a lot more flexible. Tea, hot chocolate, soup, ramen, mountain house, and much more.

I can’t stand thermos coffee so I sometimes take my Aeropress. It is very light and makes a decent cup of coffee.

It probably seems a bit much to some but I can still be on stand when everybody else is heading back to the truck to eat lunch and warm up.

Thanks everyone.

I’m going to look into those boots.

Going to order some anti perspirant.

And pack some healthy snacks.
