If you already have the 308, use it. Reduced recoil rounds as suggested.

My kids hunt with .243 or .50 cal muzzle loaders with 90gr loads...

I have two 10 year olds and a 8 year old... they can all handle the 20 ga youth gun with 3" mag turkey loads.... slugs kick harder tho so I'd suggest the 223 with quality bullets and some good shot placement

This^^^^^

Myself and my kids started out with a .243 which is a .308 necked down. Depending on the gun and the kid you may not even need the reduced recoil rounds. Biggest thing is making sure the gun fits them correctly which may require cutting the stock down if the kid is small.

Another vote for the 308.
When I was a kid my cousins and I would shoot old browning A5s at skeet on Thanksgiving morning. I remember busting lip each time, handing the gun back, and going back to play football with all my cousins.
I have tried my best to be mindful that my kids might not have the drive to shoot as much as I did/do.
After moving through a bunch of .22 and .223 rounds, and months of deliberation, I decided to let my oldest (9) try a low grain 308 at the range. It surprised him but he absolutely loved it. I am hoping he will finally get his first deer in his crosshairs this year. I wish the same for all of your little hunting buddies!

Thanks everyone, reduced 308 seems to be the bees knees here.
