Using turkey calls to acsess

Unread postby Brokenarrow1980 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 1:36 am

I am no longer stealth as I used to be and I'm looking for ways to acsess areas. I been hearing stories of people using turkey calls and imitate scratching to get close in areas that its impossible to be quiet. I also heard of people trying to imitate squirrels and intentionally making certain noises. What techniques does everyone have to acsess in noisy areas. I need to find a technique and quickly cause I sound like a herd of buffalo trying to sneak

I used to yelp softly and scratch the leaves on entry but gave it up. Just got tired of calling in turkeys almost every time. :D

Keep in mind I am using cane / Walker in most situations so I have to deal with that noise.

Lots of wild animals are noisy travelers. Mainly try to break up the usual human cadence. Take a few steps, then stop, look and listen for awhile. Keep varying these. Don't get into any kind of rhythm. If you need to, use your watch, or count, to vary your waiting time lengths. Vary the number of steps. And plan ahead for the extra time it'll take to get into your setup.

I've read about how some hunters will tie a short length of rope to a stick and then their ankle. The stick pulls through the leaves in an odd rhythm. Hiding their approach. But they still move slow and vary things up.

An occasional animal call wouldn't hurt. But like mentioned. If you over due it you may call in the real animals, then they spook and bring attention to you.

Depending on the situation. I'd only worry about this for the last hundred yards or so. Mark this on GPS or map. It often helps to stop for 15 or 20 minutes to get your brain to switch from go go go mode to stealth mode.

I'd Stealth Strip your cane, even your walker. Or in some other way. To remove any metal/wood sounds. I'll probably be dealing with crutches myself this year.

Good luck and keep us posted. And remember just getting out there, when you have a limitation like yours. Is a huge win!!!!

I have tried learning to use a diaphragm call for when I get too noisy. So you sure ain't crazy for thinking about it.
