Acorn reports

Unread postby mike_mc » Sat Aug 10, 2019 12:47 am

I checked out the few white oaks that are in my yard and didn't see a single acorn. This is Columbia County, South central Wisconsin.

What are you seeing for acorns this year?

Here in central Arkansas I haven't seen a white or red oak with acorns yet. The pin oaks, water oaks and overcups are loaded though. Also haven't seen a hickory tree with any nuts yet either, but water hickories look good and so do the persimmons.

Saw a fairly decent (although relatively small in size and green) acorn drop in West Bend, WI. Probably wind blown, but there were a lot in one area.

Not many oaks where i live, but i've noticed it doesn't seem to be a good year for hazelnuts here. Every bush i've seen only has maybe 3 or 4 nuts on them.

There is a bumper crop in N TX and SE OK from what I can tell in the locations I hunt - hunting is going to be challenging as the bucks will bed right where they are eating.... at least until the does get ripe.

I've been hearing the red oaks dropping here in south central NH. My brother in law had a red oak blow over in his yard recently and said it was loaded up with acorns. We don't really have any White oaks in our area.

I’m seeing a huge amount of red oak acorns in eastern Missouri. Many already starting to drop. Haven’t had the chance to check out areas with white oaks.

Red oaks seem to be doing well this year. I haven’t checked many whites yet. I will start checking during my trail cam runs.Last year we had a bumper crop on the white oaks

Here in my neck of the woods in SE Ohio the pin oaks I’ve seen along field edges are loaded. Haven’t made any trips back into the woods yet to really check out blacks and whites.

I am seeing some red oak acorns here in E Ohio.
No white oaks so far but I was expecting that since we had a bumper crop last year.
I have not checked chestnut oaks or Chickapen oaks yet.
We do have quite a few beech nuts and a good number of apples.

In north central MA there seems to be a good crop. My neighbor had a large branch fall on their driveway and it left quite a pile. I may go scoop them up...

North west CT is looking pretty good for reds this season, there are no whites though. Last year we had lots of whites and no reds. There's way more red oak than white around here and the whites get sucked up as soon as they hit the ground. A good mast crop of reds will keep them busy after the fall and there's not as much green stuff around. They will be able to build up their fat reserves in preparation for the winter which is great for them to stay healthy, spit out more fawns and put more energy into antler growth next spring.
