What gets you jacked about hunting (that isn't hunting)

Unread postby milkweed-militia » Wed Jul 24, 2019 9:14 am

As I was working up our small pumpkin patch at the house Saturday in the 100 degree heat, I noticed how fired up I was about the upcoming deer season.

What gets everybody fired up about the season coming up that has nothing to really do with hunting?

Obviously planting our pumpkin patch is one, but my wife also loves decorating our house for the fall. That one does it too. The trips to Hobby Lobby and her pulling all that red and orange stuff out and I might as well go to the woods and wait. I'll throw fall flavored foods in mine as well. We usually start getting paw paws in August to make breads and desserts. I've been a sucker for anything fall related for a long time and hunting just makes it worse.

Remember, things that aren't hunting related. Shooting my bow, scouting, studying maps and things like this get me ready but they're all hunting related.

I'm gonna throw hauling in square bails too. I always help my father in law haul in hay a couple of times a year. I see a lot of old rubs and trails coming out of the woods which naturally makes me want to hunt.

Cool mornings! Had 55 this morning felt great compared to the 70s for overnight lows. First thing that popped into my head as i walked out the door was season must be getting closer.
It only takes 15 seconds for the hunt of a lifetime.

I’m jacked up for hunting year round so hard to pick my trigger.

I would say when huge flocks of Canada geese show up here in early September I know it’s time.

I must say though that Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year because I know I’m off of work for an extended time so I can concentrate on nothing but hunting and monster bucks will be soon on the prowl searching for love. Just doesn’t get more exciting than that. The cool crisp fall air, the smells, sounds of birds migrating south for the winter, grunting bucks chasing does.....I could just go on and on. I never feel more alive than that peak rut period.

Trout fishing  I dont know how many times a fishing trip has turned into me seeing a new spot deer are crossing or coming to the stream to drink and me following their tracks back into the woods to see where they came from. Also get really excited just seeing deer crossing the stream or hanging out around it, always makes me wish trout season was coming to a close and deer season was starting.

Cold front came through today. Suppose to be 61 in morning here. Been in mid 70's here every morning for about a month. That will get me to day dreaming.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Cool weather.

It is 80 degrees at sunrise most days down here, bumps up to 90 by 11 or so, then we if there are any clouds or rain that'll keep it to 92-93 or so. A good rain will knock 10 degrees off in a few minutes, then once the cell goes thru the humidity and temps go up again...

Nothing like a white frost in the morning with some color left on the trees that doesn't SCREAM hunting to me. Being in FL, we don't get that around here...gotta go north.

When the Wolverine's football season kicks off! That usually starts the one month count down for hunting season. But now I'm in Kentucky, and we start September 7th, which is only Michigan's 2nd game. Looks like I'll have my earbud in on stand a few extra games this year!
Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.
