When To Hunt A Scrape

Unread postby funderburk » Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:39 am

Got several large scrapes within 100 yards of bedding that I’m extremely excited about hunting this year. In your experience, how does early season scrape activity differ from pre-rut scrape activity?

I don't think there's a wrong time to hunt a primary scrape they are used year round. They might be most active in mid to late October.

After a heavy rain bucks will come to refresh it.

I found one large scrape this spring coming out of the swamp about ten yards on dry ground and another a couple hundred yards away where two trails crossed.

Both scrapes are not far from does bedding so it might be a challenge getting in a stand without bumping deer.

Just learning about this. I’ll be watching for that more this year

I have seen bucks come to scrapes after rain as well. Scrapes usually dont get me excited unless i see some big fresh tracks in them.

You said within100 yards from bedding, that sounds worth hunting it early season, unless there is something slightly closer to the bedding, like a dropping oak then I'd get closer to that. From what iv seen, if 2 bedding areas overlap and share a staging area hunting a scrape there could be dynamite early
