Rut is always busy on public, but if anything I would expect the explosion in public land interest to increase early season use. We live in a world of instant gratification, and people tend to give up quickly on things that don't come easy. Most of these guys pounding their chests about public will move back to private after a few weeks of struggling on public. See it every year. Even the some of the THP guys have caved and moved onto private when they weren't getting it done on public. Nothing wrong with it, but public is hard, and not everybody wants to work for it.

I always get a laugh when guys say they are going to pound a public land marsh early in the season. Most scout that stuff out in the winter while walking on ice and think it will be a cake walk. They get an extreme dose of reality in September. A great majority do one hunt and say to heck with that. Heat, deep water/muck and horrendous mosquitoes tends to do that. I have had guys 20-30 years younger telling I’m crazy for going through that stuff to kill a buck. You have to enjoy the process and not even look at the challenges.

Early season in Sept is one of my favorite times to hunt. Early season in my home state of Indiana with Oct 1 opener is not. I'm still hunting early season regardless of start date but I see a big difference between mid sept opening in Wis vs Oct 1st in other states I hunt. Personally my favorite times to hunt are opening week with sept start and pre rut.

That high water in Wis last year made some areas a real pia to access to say the least.

I’m looking at getting the thermacell mr-450, is this what you recommend or is there a better one for in the stand?

It’s bad again this year from what I’ve seen. Stupid amounts of rain.
But Dewey nailed it. Won’t see many guys doing a second hunt early season in a marsh

The spots I checked this past weekend are at least a foot deeper than last season. Areas that were almost dry with ankle deep water about 5 years ago are at least chest deep now.

Well that should certainly help concentrate the bedding.

Thermacell forsure. I hunt regardless of the conditions. I like to push closer to wetter areas when it is blazing hot. I have also found that you can get some good action on cool mornings during September here.

This was one of my first "beast" experiences about 4 years ago. Second day of the season. A 85 degree day. And I went up to my waist in muck with a stand on the back and bow in my hand. 4 time just on the trek out, in knee boots. Never did make it to that island. That was a defining moment. I'm still here 4 years later.

Quest1001 wrote:So what do you guys recommend for an early season sit against mosquitoes?
Bug spray?
Nets?
Do you wear gloves and long sleeves?
Permethrin for your clothes, hat, boots. Picaridin for your skin. And a thermacell for when you’re not moving. You’ll be tick and mosquito free.

Re: Early season hunting, is it just to hot out?
In my experience, yes it is too hot. Sweat, misquotes, gnats, flies and the green jungle rip you up and keep you out of a lot of places. But I killed a good 11 pt last year September 21, the second weekend of bow season. It was surreal it felt like I joined a secret society of people who kill bucks early. Get after it!

Re: Early season hunting, is it just to hot out?
I don't like hunting in the heat, just a personal preference thing. It isn't the bugs or snakes or creepie crawlies, it is the sweating - just sitting in a puddle of sweat doesn't do it for me.
Down here it is in the 90s from the beginning of May thru the middle of October and then the beginning of December usually warms up in to the mid to upper 80s. Lots of time to hunt in the heat.
