How many pods?

Unread postby OH nontypical » Sun Mar 17, 2019 12:43 pm

Guys
How much milkweed comes out of one pod. I have seen it sold by butterfly folks already dried and want to buy some. They sell 10 to 50 pods at a time. I want some for scouting and can have here in a few days.

I have used pieces off cotton balls for years but they don’t fly as good.

Thnx

I would guess I use about 8 pods a season.

It's really kinda hard to quantify; so much depends on how often you want to toss it, how big a bundle you let fly, and how big the pod is.

I don't know what they're charging you, but I will say that ten pods should last most hunters a pretty long time; plenty long enough to find out what works for you with plenty of time to reorder when you start running low.

Surprised you can't find it growing wild in Ohio though; it's everywhere here in WI...

25 pods for $14 delivered. I’m sure I can find it here but not till later in the year. May just get 10 pods.

Thnx

I find lots of it in SE Ohio.
It is not the best time to look but I can still find pods with some seeds in them.

I’m up in the northern part of the state and don’t see too often right now. I grabbed 10 pods for $7 delivered and will find more for next season.

I have hunted in SE Ohio since the early 90’s.

I live near the 77/70 intersection and generally hunt within an hour of here.

I probably toss milkweed 20 times per sit and sit maybe 30 times a year. I have yet to go through more than one pod in a season. I do use very little when I toss, I like to use as little as possible but still enough to see it go 100 yards or so (when I can see that far in the stand.

I went through about four pods last season. I had a dozen ready to go so I wasn't rationing my use of it. Ten should last you multiple years.

I used a gallon ziplock bag full last season, and ran out before my season was over. I'm sure I'm dropping too much at one time, but it was also my first season using it so I was dropping it like crazy every time I went out. It was amazing to me what I had missed using a puffer for so long.
