Interesting scent observations.
The above pic is of 2 fawns I had hanging out on my property all summer and into the season. I never seen a doe with them. I assume she was hit by a car or something. Every day like clock work they were on my Apple trees. I have a blind and a treestand on my property.
I hunt behind the house any time I can't make it to the public land for various reasons. It is best suited for south west wind. One day I had a north west wind. It was just off from where the deer come in.
The fawns came in just like clockwork. However the wind swirled and they picked up my scent stream. Keep in mind this is weeks into the season. I had been walking back there often with rubber boots. I had kicked them up numerous times doing yard work and so on. This day however I was in my blind. They went on alert and nervously paced around soaking in my delicious B.O. This is all about 5-15 yards away from me. Eventually they had enough and moved off. I never seen them in day light again.
I got cam pics of them coming in at night and caught them in my truck head lights a few times when I was coming home. I could also see their tracks still. They were still there but never showed in daylight. Fawns.
My thoughts are how different foot scent is to hot body scent. They never cared about my foot scent. One day of the wrong wind and that was it. Really showed me the damage that can be done of just one bad sit with bad thermals or bad wind. It was very interesting.

Re: Interesting scent observations.
It has been a while since I have mentioned this. I used to have a pack of chessies and we would take them pheasant hunting. Well in Michigan pheasant hunting is either pay to hunt stocked birds or walk around with a gun and not see birds. I ran those dogs over a lot of stocked birds. Amazing how they could tell the difference between a bird that had been there within the last few hours vs. a bird that just left.
Since I got to observe that so many times I try to relate that to deer.

A good friend of mine has a great pheasant dog. He claims that when she gets “birdy”, she’ll know within 10-15 yards if she’s following their trail in the right direction. If she picks the wrong direction it’s a 180 degree about face.
I can definitely see how letting a big buck wind you is an absolute game over for that stand location for the season.
Interesting observation Oldrank. Thanks for posting!

Re: Interesting scent observations.
I've seem several crazy observations with both wild and half tame deer. Right across the street from my house is a high fenced farm. A ole lady bought it several years ago and it was already fenced. She's a animal lover and allows no hunting. These deer have never had any negative experience from man. There's a older gentleman who lives down the road and everyday year round drives his golf cart down there with a bucket of feed. The deer recognize the sound of that cart from 100s of yards away and start running to the fence. If the wind is blowing from the man to the deer they will run up a practically eat out of his hand. However If the wind is blowing from them to the man they don't trust it, they will wait from 75 yards away until he leaves.
Also, interesting about these deer is something happens to both bucks and doe's right around 2 years of age. They no longer trust the man even though he's fed them since they were fawns and never experienced anything negative. You will see the twos and 3s hanging back in the wood line until after dark. Older than that I don't see them at all and I know they are there. I always found it kinda interesting.
Wild deer with swirling winds I've seen do all kinds of crazy stuff. In some cases I don't think they can tell where it's coming from and it causes a panic. Sometimes even causing them to run out in the open and rely on the eyes. Have also had them run right to me on occasion and hunker down.

Very interesting stuff about the tame deer. I think alot this is triggered by prey/predator relationship over thousands of years. It's not just a learned response to hate humans. They are born to recognize us as danger.
Those fawn lived in my back yard. I would bet they were born there. Their mother disappeared when they were just a few months old. I was likely their first human encounter. They went nocturnal instantly in relation to feeding off the apple trees.
