October winds
does anyone else have a issue hunting inside timber during October and have the winds be the exact opposite of what the weatherman says it should be? I’m guessing it has something to do with the leaves being on the trees because it seems to be more consistent in November. When I check the weather out in the open it is accurate with that is to be called. As soon as I get back in a cove it’s the opposite. I’m hunting hardwood areas in central il around a lake. It been pretty frustrating...does anyone else deal with this issue?

Re: October winds
You are right on when you mention it having to do with the leaves. The foliage blocks and shapes the wind currents just like rocks and vegetation moves water currents in rivers and streams. If you are back in a 'cove' then you are most likely experiencing an eddie in the wind current. I am still learning how to predict these currents so I am dropping milkweed whenever I can to see what is happening.

I have noticed it this fall as well....most certainly the foliage that affects the wind currents. Should be better come November.

Re: October winds
Good to hear I'm not the only one. I was starting to think the forecasts I was looking at were telling me which direction the wind was blowing instead of where it was coming from . It's been a pain so far. I've carried a puffer with me the past couple of hunts so I could keep tabs on wind direction on my way in without using up all my milkweed. I've only had a couple of sits really go according to plan so far, and those were close to field edges.

Thanks for the responses...I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with this. I’m half tempted to just pick spots assuming the wind will be the opposite of what it says....hopefully November will bring something consistent

Re: October winds
The winds can be unpredictable but the thermals are very predictable. I base my hunts more off of thermals than wind this time of year. And I look for days with winds over 10 mph and hunt up high where the wind is consistent.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

I'm in Hill country and it always feels like the winds are unpredictable.. The leaves definitely add a layer of challenge.

Yes!!! It happens all of the time! It can be so frustrating because I have too have three or four spots picked on a daily basis, just in case the wind isn't doing what it is supposed to do.
Anything worth doing, is worth over doing.

This has been one of the areas where a diary can pay off. Record forecasted wind and actual wind. Use for future reference.
