One moment in time...
How crazy we whom choose to chase mature whitetails must be...
We dream about it all year...
We scout non-stop, always looking, listening, and plotting...
We work our lives away to save money to afford to do it...
We make detailed plans...
Burn our only vacations...
We study maps...
We practice our equipment all summer...
We buy the best equipment money can buy...
We do detailed exercise plans to get into shape so we can climb the hills and venture deep in the swamps...
Its a wonder our wives don't leave us...
All this for a chance that you might get one moment, one shot, one chance this year. Some will, some won't...
However, if you take a step back and look at what we are trying to achieve, its an all year obsession for a thrill that will last minutes, or maybe seconds...
And when you get that chance, its a pretty good bet you might fail. You have to decide under pressure in a split second, when to draw, when to shoot, control the shakes, not panic, is this the buck you want? and keep your cool...
I know this is crazy. I ponder all we go thru for a chance that we might get that one fleeting moment. The shot.
To all you crazy people out there who understand and are nodding in agreement and actually understand this message Our day is coming.
The time is almost upon us.
Good luck out there!

Awesome post Dan
Idk how else to say it except a whitetail deer is just the coolest animal god created. Being in bow range is a passion and feeling that I think is difficult to replicate.

Well Yeah! It's like when my daughter asks me how I can like to fish so much or a coworker ask why I like to bow hunt so much. If you have to ask, you won't get it anyway.

Best time of the year. Nothing gets me more excited than being 18’ closer to god chasing my passion.
I love and enjoy a lot of things in life. But nothing compares to a whitetail

Like John Eldridge says in his book Wild at Heart - man was created with three desires in his heart. Whitetail deer hunting gives us an adventure to pursue. For most of us living in the concrete jungle, it is as close as it comes to a real adventure and unlocks something deep within our heart put there by our creator.

I often wonder this. I have no idea what I would do with all that free time.

My father-in-law gave me that book for Christmas years ago. I can't really remember if I read it or not, good stuff though no doubt. I read a lot.

Re: One moment in time...
Last year at this time I had yet to find the Beast. Around the 1st of September every year was when I would really just start to think about the upcoming deer season.
Mind you, up until October 21st of last year I had never shot a deer, so it didn't take much preparation to think about sitting on that field edge in the same preset stand on that little 40 acres of farm land. Only variable was whether or not I would be hunting over beans or corn.
However, since killing that first buck, and then experincing what public land was about for the first time, and then finding the Hunting Beast...
well, let's just say it's become an obsession.
I have hardly thought about anything else except for hunting whitetails. The year-round scouting, the studying of maps, the plotting and planning... This is the type of hunting that I was born to do, what I've been missing all along. I can't wait till October 1st!

Re: One moment in time...
A group of hunters gathered around me today at work wanting the beast hats and shirts they ordered... One brought up opening day and talked about the stand he was going to sit in. He looked at another, and said where you hunting opening day? One after another they talked about the spot they planned to be opening day... Then the 1st guy looked at me and said "I bet you have a great tree picked out... I kinda chuckled and said " I have no idea where I will be opening day" How would I know what the wind will be doing? Patterns may change for the better, or the worse... I thought to myself, man, they just don't get it...
