Radio Collared Buck Movement

Unread postby Zpeachey » Wed Jul 18, 2018 12:01 pm

Penn State radio collared a buck for two years.
Kind of eye opening seeing all the videos on this link. They use a map to show terrain and daily movements.
Not sure if this was a mature animal but still worth watching!

They have lots of great info. Some good data showing bucks hiding on the leeward side of ridges.

This particular buck’s story is spooky. Like he picked out his own gravesite.

On the Wired to Hunt podcast #194 they interview Duane Diefenbach who is a wildlife ecologist with the US Geological Survey who was one of the lead researchers on the Deer Forest Study in Pennsylvania where they radio collared all those deer. It's a good listen, and confirms many beast tactics with the research they found on mature buck movement.

I've seen this before. Very cool study. Would love to see how the movements correlated with wind shifts.

I haven’t watched the study yet, what I’ve wondered over the years is if when we see a mature buck show up we have never seen before is it really a stranger or is it a buck that was kicked off as a year and half old and now returning to its home range as a fawn. Do those bucks make it back to where they were born? Are they some of the bucks that show up once a year in the rut? Or do those Deer never return

Very interesting.

Goes to really show how much bucks trust their bedding locations most of this bucks life was spent on that point.

That one season most of his movements were in the valley below his bed I'm guessing hunters were ontop of the ridge often.

Wonder why this buck never walked far east to west. Almost all of his travels were north or south.

Amazing how far he traveled to die.
