Hip waders or chest waders for hunting swamps

Unread postby John PAhunting » Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:30 am

I am going to be getting hip waders or chest waders for hunting and scouting swamps. What do you guys prefer? Thanks.

I’ve had both. No preference. Bought them cheap in case they got a hole in them. Both styles did the job.

Hip boots are way more comfortable than chest waders. I've used both.

This past season I waded wet with jungle boots through October then switched to a waist wader under my hunting pants.

Very good point! Comfort would probably lean me to hip waders also.

I just got these for $99. They are super light, worked great the couple days I was out.
They will be too cold for hunting mid-late season, then I will just where my neoprene waders if needed.

Hip waders but like Jackson marsh, jungle boots in warm weather.

I have a cheap pair of lacrosse rubber hip boots. Nothing special but I just strap on a pair of boots to my stand. Even better since I got the iwom. All I need to bring is my iwom and a pair of light boots and I'm set.

I do think if you hunt marshes and deeper swamps, a pair of chest waders is good to have, especially when the water gets cold. I don't own a pair, but crossing a river in my underwear isn't that bad if you aren't in a rush. I wouldn't go drop a couple hundred bucks on a pair though.

Ive been looking at getting some hip boots as my chest waders get uncomfortable. But man they are pricey for neoprene ones. And the pvc ones seem like they would be to loud in brush

Jungle boots or sneakers is really the way to go if it is warm.

I have both hip and chest waders. I almost always go for the chest waders. Idk, I always just think it would really suck to be trudging with hip waders a mile or so deep and realize you need chest waders... unless I know the area and water levels with certainty...

I got my proline hip and chest waders at the end of season discounted at Dicks for like $15...

There is no perfect answer. It depends how deep it is where you go.

If everything is only knee deep, then I would say hip boots. Chest waders are tougher to walk in, but also give you a little more safety factor in deeper water.

I may try the sneakers option during early season. Slogging in chest waders in 80+ degree weather sucks!

Chest waders are no fun to walk long distances in. I have a pair but for emergency use only if I need to retrieve a buck from deeper water. I prefer hip boots in most cases but recently went to rubber boots with Dan’s Five Star chaps attached to them. Much more comfortable than regular hip boots and can be rolled down to the top of the boot when not needed. The comfort of your favorite rubber boots with the option of quickly turning them into hip boots. They work perfectly for me.

Most of the places I hunt I have cheap lacrosse hip boots on. I just wear them in the stand. I do have several places that all for cheat waders occasionally, which are a giant pain to walk distances in but sometime you gotta do what you gotta do. Like others said, early season don't worry too much about either.
