What would you do

Unread postby Sailfish_WC » Mon Jan 29, 2018 2:40 am

I have a public land hunt tomorrow - Thursday
We have a front coming through tonight.
It appears it will push through a bit slower than predicted.

I had a decent sight picked out that was prime for the north wind we should have had in the am
Unfortunately it's going to be a south then southwest then west from 5a-9a before switching to the ideal nw/n wind.

This is a rifle hunt
But I was/am setting up in a ground blind that was within 120 yards or so of bedding.

That am wind is just the utterly worst for my approach, blowing right into them.

So, do I slide in when they open the gates and hope the rain/sprinkles don't blow my stink all over, wait til it Turns and slide in at daylight?

Good news is, this area is about to hit peak chase/breeding phase. I have other sights for south winds BUT that will change in just those couple hours.

Soooo...thoughts?

I am a big believer in if something should go wrong it always will. There is a diff in a non favorable just off wind and completely making hunter suicide with a dead wrong one. I would slowly still hunt using the mild rain to cover my noise, then still hunt my way into stand when the right wind arrives.

It's hard to answer without knowing the area but I would slide in @ 5 to a spot that is closest to where you want to hunt that will work for the wind you have. Then transition over when the wind switches.
Remember, the wind may not be good even if the direction seems right and the wind could be different than the forcast so have a good backup plan.

Good luck!

This is one of the advantages of still hunting. I'm not tied down to where a stand is. Always always play the wind. Have you thought of not using the stand?

This is good stuff I like to expand my thought processes and you guys help me

It is a pop up so my stand location is not set

This bedding area I just didn't leave a whole lot of opportunities for getting on a tree with my set up
Additionally there are not a ton of shooting lanes because of the thickness of trees brush etc. I will put thought into this and work it out tonight thanks !

You kinda got a rifle in your hand. The wind is only bad if it blows directly to him, and if you can see him you probably have a shot.
