This happened to me last weekend! On a good buck and by the next weekend when I could he, he dropped!
Last year on the last day of the season I had two shed mature bucks walk past me while I was hunting on the ground. Talk about a let down. Cool I got on the bucks but sucks they didn’t hang on to their horns just a few more days. Just another challenge hunting late season.
I feel like they know they are not a target or not in as much danger without the rack. I can’t prove it but it’s not the first time I’ve seen shed bucks acting less skittish and
Moving more even when it wasn’t so cold out.
The buck I was after, made his first daylight appearance on cam since mid November, on Jan. 1st. He was walking 17 yds in front of my stand, on a NW wind. A NW wind is perfect for the stand, but I have yet to encounter a mature buck on a NW wind from that stand (only mature encounters are on dangerous "off-winds"). Both sides of his antlers were shed and his forehead blood soaked. An hour and half before end of shooting hours, he was standing in the middle of the neighbors cut cornfield, along the state highway. There were two days left in the alternative weapons season. If he'd pulled such stunts with his antlers intact, he wouldn't have gotten a chance to shed em.
