My first deer. All thanks to the beast.
Hey all, I havn't been on for a while, but I just wanted to extend a huge thank you to Dan and the whole hunting beast community. Yesterday, on the opening day of gun season in Ontario I was sitting in a tree with my orange on, with my selfbow in hand when I sunk an arrow into my first deer. It wouldn't have been possible without all the knowledge I gained here on the beast.
I came to hunting later in life, with the purpose of taking game with the selfbows I had recently gained an interest in. I had no hunting mentor, and no place to hunt, so my first 3 years of public hunting were devoid of a single deer sighting. It was depressing. I decided I need to do something different, and I remembered hearing Dan infalt on the wired to hunt podcast. So I dove in to the beast. I spent almost 2 years reading as much as I could. Bought all the dvds. Bought a lone wolf. Stealth stripped it. Added stick talons. Made a 2 step aider. Did a paracord wrap on the outside. All thanks to tutorials or products from various members on the beast. My first spring of full beast scouting I found more buck sign than ever. That fall, I saw my first bucks on stand. That was last year. Another spring of beast scouting, and this year, I shot over the back of a spike on Oct 30th. Then, yesterday, way back in a cedar swamp, on a semi-blind hunt, I was in a tree I'd never sat in before that I picked out on google. At 10am, about 20 min after quietly setting up my tricked out Lone wolf assault (my 2nd setup that morning-I climbed down after grunting in a six point to the wrong side of my treestand at 730am) the biggest buck I'd ever seen on stand walked by grunting at 15 yards. And I drew back and let fly. It was a spine shot unfortunately, so I had to climb down and make a follow up shot. Then the work began. I quartered him out and packed him out in 2 trips using my lone wolf as a pack frame.
The beast gave me the confidence and knowledge to deal with hunting pressure on public land, and to go to these deep crazy places where the bucks are. The deer hunting knowledge on this forum is unsurpassed, and I owe huge debt of gratitude to all the members here.
Thanks you.

First deer ever a nice buck with a stick bow!!
Awesome story. I got into hunting later then most at 25. I don't know how long I would have stayed at it if I hadn't seen any deer my first season. Now you just gotta start looking for the next one

That’s a great first deer! And with a selfbow!
What material did you use for the bow? I’ve made a few osage bows backed with sinew in the past. Killed a few deer with them but I don’t have the time to tinker as much now that I have kids.
Congrats again!
