How far can he scent check
Just wondering what's the furthest you ever saw a buck scent check a bedding area or a scrap...30yds? 50? 100? Thinking ahead to the rut and a few spots I think the bucks cruise by and just check the bedding and scrapes without getting into them

Re: How far can he scent check
I can't definitively answer your question bit i know i read an article where Charles Alsheimer started his pen deer would work one edge of the fence constantly when the wind blew from the adjacent woods towards the pen. I believe he said the distance across the field to the woods was like 1/4 mile. I think the answer to this question depends on terrain and how thick the cover is in that area. I'd assume more open and flat areas can be checked at greater distances.

400 yards is what I have seen they can smell further away then that I think In open terrain.

Over the years, I have seen bucks checking downwind farm fields 250+ yards away.

Too many variables IMO to accurately give you a number...

Agree with to many variables. Wind speed, temperature, moisture and terrain all play a big role. I normally look at the terrain and available cover and can form a pretty good guess where he will travel scent checking. Watch a bird dog work a piece of heavy cover sometime, it's a good learning experience.

Re: How far can he scent check
In Michigan's thumb I have seen does and bucks scent check and bust from well over 300+ yards away. I watched a group of 10+ deer stroll out of an adjacent woodlot approx. 500-600 yards away and cut our scent stream in an open field. You could see them all turn their noses up. Some of them became very skittish. The didn't bust out, but they knew we were there.
I have also seen a single buck cut downwind of our blind in the same property about 200 yards out. The second he hit our wind he bugged out and did a 180 and bolted out of the area.

They can smell a long ways as the posters have stated but to set up on a bedding area I would let the land dictate that. I would set up off the edge because that is where they are most likely to travel. This could be 30 yds or maybe 100 yds or more from bedding.
