Topo Maps

Unread postby Solobowhunter85 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 1:42 am

Just curious what source you guys are getting your maps from? I would like to see a topo map overlay an aerial. I know I've seen these in the past but I'm having trouble finding them now. Thanks

Hillmap lets you look at topos and aerials side by side at the same time. Cal topo lets you do overlays.

Caltopo using overlays is my favorite way to do that. Normal relief baselayer then usgs and aerial at 50% opacity each is my starting point typically the slide those depending what you want to see. If they had historical imagery it would be ideal.

if you've got a smart phone I strongly recommend ONXMaps. I used it while out scouting over the weekend. It worked great. topo/satellite overlay worked great. I marked deer sign as I walked. Didn't even need cell service. You can log into your account on your computer too.

I've used Mytopo in the past and liked it quite well.

This is my favorite way to view hilly terrain too! (Normal relief baselayer then overlay USGS topo at 50% opacity), this creates a "3 dimensional" topo that is just easier to read than a standard topo. Also, it is possible to overlay this hybrid topo from CalTopo in Google Earth so you can view it over historical imagery and slide the translucency slider back and forth to highlight what you want. Caltopo allows you to do this by saving maps as KMZ files. Then you simply open the KMZ files in Google Earth and save them to "My Places". I have done this for all the areas I hunt and it often times helps me see things with the terrain I may otherwise miss.

If you want historical imagery, here's a link that will show you how to add topo's to Google Earth. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Great post! X2 Since youre from my neck of the woods SoloBowhunter. Go to OnX maps and be sure your county is listed. Most of the ones hunt are not.

I used to use hillmap as well as OnX, but now OnX is all I really need.
