Hard horned

Unread postby WV Bowhunter » Mon Aug 28, 2017 7:35 am

Checked a few cameras today and got my first hard horned buck of the year. Just happens to be one of the main bucks on my "would like to shoot list". I think he's 5 1/2 this fall. He has small hooves for his age/size.

Wow. Great buck, too! Do you commonly see them shedding velvet this early?

Normally right around the end of Aug I'll get my first. Not sure if there is anything to it but I found this bucks shed's last year and got them in front of one of my cameras. He shed last fall on 12/8, which is really early. I had a thread last year on here about it when I found them.

Sure sounds like there's a relation between velvet shedding and antler shedding

I seem to recall that thread about him shedding early...

Me too, I was hoping that he would take a bigger jump this year but he is still a giant for my area.

WVBowhunter, congrats on finding the sheds. I am a shed nut and enjoy hunting for them as much as I do hunting the deer themselves. Love seeing the hard horn too, kinda marks the start of a hunters super serious mode for the season. Great buck

Pulled camera today, had 2 velvet bucks racking it up...still in velvet. 1 buck was very mature...the other buck was a 3.5yr old.
