Here is a link I came across which I found entertaining in regards to understanding wind and thermals thought I would pass it along FYI.

I'll try to save everyone a little bit of time filtering through everything by listing the areas I thought might be of interest. Chapter 9 had the most value, with chapter three following second. The sections listed for chapters 1&2 are mostly for understanding.

-Various forms of energy (particularly potential)
`Heat transfer mechanisms (particularly convection and radiation)
-Snow (depending on where you live)
Chapter 3
-seasonal temperature variations
-Daily temperature variations
-Fundamentals of daytime heating

Chapter 9
-Focus on small scale motions
-Evolution of the boundary layer
-Small scale eddies in the atmosphere
-wave clouds
-Flow over mountains and mountain passes

-Other local winds
