Buck beds in open
So i was scouting yesterday around a fairly large sage pond yesterday looking for beds. I found a few with a fairly large amount of hair in them near some small trees that run a long a small burm that runs through the middle of the sage pond. We left the area and came back the area later on our way back to our bikes and stopped to look into the pond. As we were looking two large bucks stood up and stared at us for a bit then blew and took off torwards the beds we found earlier. Curious what the bucks were doing in the middle of the sage field kinda in the open, we walked out there. There were 2 beds basically in the open in the sage field. Seemed very out of place and there was nothing around except what ever weeds grow in a dried up pond. Are these temporary beds? Maybe just getting sunlight for antler growth? Should i even worry about focusing on beds like this?

I would find those beds, sit in them, scan around, and see if you can answer your own questions. You need the bucks perspective.

Typically what you've described are night time beds when deer lay down to chew their cud.

Could have been cooler if the dried up pond had any moisture to it at all.

It did have moisture and lots weeds and grasses but kinda like a black mud. Not enough to get your feet wet or anything

Re: Buck beds in open
I've noticed the same kind of thing where i hunt. We have a large tract of overgrown fields and there's been many time we jumped bucks out of them in very random spots. I've actually jumped deer (not mature bucks) and watched them run 60 or 70 yards and bed right back down in the tall grass. They are very secure in that grass and dang hard to kill in there lol.

Re: Buck beds in open
Typically this time of the year you can find bucks bedded in about anyplace they are not bothered by people, open fields, next to houses, any where close to a foodsource and water, this is a relaxed time of year for them. The way it sounds to me freezAR is probally right they were bedded in the pond and the cooler mud was prabbaly keeping them cool, provided they had the shade from the tall grasses. I wouldnt think they would bed in the wide open with the hot sun beaming down on them! I would think they may not be bedded there this fall when hunting season starts. But if nobody goes there and they feel safe, that could be a option for a bed later on! Something to check out later! Just my .02 worth!

Re: Buck beds in open
I have seen some of my best bucks in central/south bedded in and around flag ponds that are pretty much 'open', they just need a little shade.
