I am doing some map scouting for a new area I plan to hunt this year. I have never hunted a marsh before and am wondering if the gaps I see on the photos here are deer trails or just something else? Can you identify deer crossings via Google Earth?

Yes. When they connect high ground. When they connect deeper water sections then they are beaver/otter etc... or where the water drains/flows.

Zoom way in close just before it gets fuzzy. You'll see them and they will be pretty obvious.

That would be a good spot to put a camera. I'd put it about 8 feet high and angle it down at the trail. Let it run for about a month and see what you get.
Google maps is also good for picking up trail in CRP as well. I have a couple spots that really show up on Google earth in the fall winter. The best thing to do is go back on images and find one that is taken in November to April, I think that time frame is MUCH easier at spotting trails than the months with leaves on the trees.

Just this week I notice this same thing in a public CRP I hunt! I was thinking at first "ah no way" but I'm convinced its deer trails. Especially after reading you guys say the same thing.
Trails I saw were almost all on the east edge of the field.
We get a lot of West winds so it makes sense coming up to the field from bedding leeward all day on the east slopes.

Resolution on aerials is getting pretty amazing compared to even 5 years ago. In 2013 I killed a buck on opening day. Easiest way to drag him out was a direct route straight thru waist high marsh grasses busting trail as we went. About a month later the aerials were updated and I could easily see my drag trail from the kill site all the way to my truck.
Since then resolution has gotten even better. Deer trails are extremely easy to see now in marshes and swamps without a lot of overhead vegetation. Sure makes cyberscouting much more productive.

Lol, yea the images are getting crazy. Last year I spotted a buck standing in a bed on aerial photo.

Google maps, try and find an aerial that was taken in the winter months and you can really pick them out. I sometimes look at public land around Chicago to pick out these spots even though I probably won't hunt them for a while.

Yes, I definitely plan on scouting it, but since it's a few hours away, and a large area I wanted to cyberscout first to focus my on the ground scouting later this summer.
