If you expect to just show up and kill a big buck it's probably not gonna happen. I know plenty of guys that have done that and failed miserably. There aren't B&C bucks hiding behind every tree like so many think. You will still put in a ton of work to kill a nice buck just like anywhere else.

Right... I guess what I'm curious about is I put a ton of work in to hunting cheap(er) states like Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana... is Iowa really that much better than those states, all amounts of work/scouting, etc being equal.

Compared to WI I say it's worth it. Can't speak for the other states.

I would love to go to Iowa some time! I just haven't found the time at this point. Going with someone who been there already would reduce the learning curve tremendously. There is alot of Wisconsin I have left to explore yet.

Iowa is over rated, haven't seen a buck over ear wide here in years.

Hoping to draw this year with a couple guys. Made it out 3 weekends to scout. The best public land on cyber-scouting was the worst for deer sign and hunter pressure IMO. Luckily, I added additional public properties each trip to my scouting. Its too bad there are so many hunters applying now as it looks like only around 1/2 of non resident applications for zone 5 were successful last year with 3 preference points. We are applying as a group to ensure we go together, but one of the guys only has 3 points so we might not be successful drawing cause IA selects groups based on the hunter with the least amount of points.

I'm in for my point. I'm keeping an eye on the cwd situation down there though, it could change things. If I go one more time that could be all. Might hit up some other states and western hunts, Colorado elk hunting for me this year.

Curious if anyone had any info for a cabin to rent in zone 5 near the chariton area. Undecided on when in November as I have another rut bowhunt planned also. Really hoping not to stay in a hotel. Thanks

The hotels book up pretty fast in that area during the rut. I usually tent it when hunting in Zone 5.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

That's what I had heard when I stayed at one in the spring scouting. Thanks for the info!
