Lets talk about mid day hunting.
Reading mapping trophy bucks. Author really stresses hunting midday during the rut.
Its interesting. Hunters seem to be pretty divided about hunting all day. Personally, if I have NOTHING else that needs to be done in regards to scouting, I will spend all day on stand. This is when I am traveling to hunt. So there are no "chores" or work that needs to be done.
But the all of my success is still 7am to 11am and 2pm to dark. I will also say, I do not have years and years of experience sitting all day. This year, will be using the time to scout a bordering state.
Interested to hear your theories / stories on midday movement...especially in regards to 4-5yr old bucks.

Biggest bucks I have ever seen in the woods were from 10-2.
And not all of them were during the rut

Not much experience with 4-5 year olds but I have killed a lot of bucks 2.5-3.5 between 11-12 it's almost predictable when I will kill a buck during the rut. These are good deer for around here. If there's a fully mature buck around they won't cruise at all. They will spend all day in doe bedding areas waiting for them to come to him. I talked my uncle into sitting till noon one year. He would always only sit till 9-10. He shot a nice 8 point at 11:15 in early November.

I've had the same experiences in late october. The only chance I have at sitting all day is if I move during the middle of it. Any sitting patience I have is learned, six hours at a time is like a maximum.

My biggest bow buck was shot at 11am. He chased a doe right under my stand and that proved to be a mistake.

Re: Lets talk about mid day hunting.
My brother has killed the most midday bucks of my inner hunting circle. I have definitely seen midday cruising, and hot does spooked out of bedding by other hunters with mature bucks in tow. I've also seen a lot of good bucks cruising crp fields and fence rows mid day during the rut. If the conditions seem right and I can, I sit all day. My brothers biggest buck was I think October 29 at 11:30 and the first deer he saw that day.

Re: Lets talk about mid day hunting.
From early November on into mid November I love to sit all day. I have seen and killed a lot of midday bucks. Thinking off the top of my head I know of 5 that I have taken midday. One came in and bedded 60 yards from me right at first light. He laid there until 11am and got up and came by me allowing me to harvest him. Of the 5, 3 have been 4 plus. There is no doubt in my mind it is worth staying in the stand midday during the right time of the year.

I've gotten a handful of midday bucks over the years and seen a few that got away, I am a believer.

Interesting replies so far! Keep them coming. My plans for 2017 will still include all day sits...just less of them. And only during the window at the tail end of the rut when I see most of the 4yr+ bucks on the move.

I wounded the biggest buck I ever seen from stand last November between noon and one o' clock with the temps in the 60s. He was following a hot scent trail. Other bucks were moving in the area at that time as well.

I killed my biggest one at 1:30 and have consistently seen my biggest bucks mid day, but this is when I am hunting too. This is a big reason why tracking has become such an important part of my hunting approach. It's a dad's life.

Re: Lets talk about mid day hunting.
During the rut I have had some great hunts during midday. This past season wasn't one of them since we were dealing with such warm temps but seems like some did have great sightings along with some big bucks killed. I do all day hunts because you just never know so I want to maximize my odds. I enjoy my time on stand especially during the rut and you have to be out there to kill one.
One year a friend of mine was hunting a few hundred yards away from me. He texted me that he was done at 9:30 am because no deer were moving. I stayed put all day and from 10 am-3 pm five bucks over 130" came cruising by but I never got a good shot. All of them came from where he was sitting so if he had been patient and stayed on stand he likely would have killed one of them. Don't think he was too thrilled when I told him that later that night.

Mid day hunting the rut over the last two years has been terrible with the warm temps. But I am a believer the racks get bigger as the morning progresses. Something about mid morning. The woods are quiet and most are laying down. A great time for a big buck to move.. I smile just thinking about it...

Re: Lets talk about mid day hunting.
I've had good success during the rut from daylight all the way up to about 1:00....after that sightings tend to drop off. I have seen a flurry of activity around 9:00 am as well, and I believe that is about the time bucks tend to leave their morning bed and start to cruise. I can think of at least two bucks I killed right around 9:00 am during the rut, and both times I was set up around a hundred yards from the bedding area......coincidence?
