How close is he..?
Scouted some new area yesterday afternoon for the first time. The tract borders a river with a very very steep drop off to the river. It's all hardwoods up to the river bank and down to the river. There is one lone ag field that extends into the timber and creates a pinch point between the river hill and the open field. This pinch point is extremely thick and contains some monstrous rubs. I don't believe he is bedding anywhere in this thicket but due to the sign it appears that he comes through there often. Due to the amount of sign is it reasonable to assume he's bedding relatively close? I was running out of daylight so I didn't get to go much further than the thicket.

Sounds like a rut cruising route around the field through the bottleneck to me. That or maybe its a staging area for the buck before entering the field. BUT you don't know if that sign was made during the day or at night. Don't get hung up on just the sign, find the bedding and connect the dots
Go back and try to determine where the bucks are coming from and going to from that point, which direction are most of the rubs facing and scout along that travel route....really impossible to say just by that sign if the buck is bedding close or far.
Are the rubs tall? That is the determining factor of how old the bucks are that lay them down. I have seen yearlings and 2 year olds tear up trees 6-10" in diameter.

I agree with Joe... He beat me to it. I was going to say combo cruising wrought / parallel trail going thru a funnel.

Sounds like a dynamite spot for next year. This time of year can be tough, when the deer yard up.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

The rubs go both directions. I would find it hard to believe that this is a young deer given the size of some of the rubs as well as the amount of damage done to the tree.
