NE Kansas Question

Spent Christmas with family and got to talk with a nephew on my wife's side...
Long story short - He basically lives on a Farm in NE Kansas and invited me to hunt with him this season. He's not a seasoned deer hunter and doesn't hunt much but says he has seen 3 big bucks, missed a mainframe 10 with split brows (shot under), and has had some small bucks walk under him this season.

I believe it is Unit 10. Near Topeka. He hunts public areas - has 200 acres (river bottom, woods, ag, CRP) across the street from his farm and mentioned Perry Lake area public land hunting being about 30 minutes from his place.

Is it worth the trip?
I'd drive out - 20 hours each way.
It would be archery compound/crossbow.

When is the best time for pre-rut/rut movement? Would try to time myself for that.

$450 permit application due by April. Have to make up my mind by then.

Pretty much - anything to avoid learning how to hunt FL swamps...

Sounds like a good trip. Go for it. Just gas and a tag, you can't go wrong. Been to Kansas twice, you won't regret it..

Lived in Wichita, KS for 3 years, 2006-2009. Seen the biggest bucks of my life there. Itching to get back. It's worth it.

The public will be tough in November; Lots of people around in general on public. It's not an area you are going to out walk anybody else.

With these warm fall's, I'd wait until later november as in 2nd-3 week. That's usually when the biggest are moving around with the cold fronts, last does, etc.

Don't forget you will need the hunting license as well. $97 I think

I had an encounter with by far the biggest buck of my life this fall on my first trip to Kansas. No pre-season scouting and limited cyber scouting. 3 of the 4 guys in my group saw the biggest deer they have ever seen in their lives and they are all pretty serious hunters. We were in the NE part of the state. The quality of deer there is undeniable.

I've aquire a over 1k acres of private due to a new friendship with my tenant.

His Mom asked "what do you like to hunt, pheasant".

I said that would be a bucket list hunt and also replied deer too.

Oh, she said, there are plenty of deer, you should come down, I'm sure you could get a few...

They don't hunt!

Bingo - I am there for my 50th b-day hunt - via wifey!!!

I'm hoping for a long scouting weekend in March.

And through some research and help from Maine I am planning a November hunt the 2nd & 3rd week of the month.

I have a retired friend that is Mr. Camping, so he he will bring all his gear - wall tent, wood stove, etc.

I will prepare food - Chef EDmerile.

With the pheasants, take a second and aim for the head - they are a lot easier to hit than grouse. You'll like it.

That is probably one of the better ways to sum the area up, hard to outwalk anybody...nothing seems to be more than a 30-45 minutes walk at its furthest, most stuff is 5-10 minutes from road or parking area, because the public tracts aren't very large or far from the road. But like I was saying in the PM, if you are there to hunt and hunt for a week straight you will get your opportunities!
