I know I'm new around here, but I am hoping someone will be willing to help me out a little with hunting eastern Nebraska. I would like to narrow down an area for 2017, and hopefully use the same area in future years. Initially I am looking at SE Nebraska or NE Nebraska. This is just one of the places I would like to expand my hunting horizons to, but I have to start somewhere.
I will focus on public to begin with, but hopefully over time I can gain access to some privately owned land. I am looking for areas that will allow me some quality hunting and allow me to hunt other states close by. For example NW Missouri or SE South Dakota. I have never been to any of these areas so any information will be helpful. If anyone wants to chime in about adjacent areas too, I'm all ears. Yes, I am applying for Iowa points also. I don't have a lot of experience traveling to hunt yet, so I'm willing to listen.
So my questions: Would you choose SE or NE? Are there sources of public land that I might access that is not on the online Nebraska Public Land Atlas? Like County owned land etc. Anyone have any experience with the private land open to public hunting programs? Any experience with gaining private land permission? Is trespass fee type access common? Any areas to avoid?
I'm not looking to crowd in on anyone. I'm also not afraid to do it the hard way, like hike way in or cross water or swamps. Once I narrow down an area, I plan on making a spring scouting trip after lots of cyber scouting. During hunting season, I will probably be hunting/camping out solo, but I'm open to lodging or camping suggestions. I do have a camper. I plan on hunting during early-mid November.
Please PM or email me if you would rather, or arrange a phone call. I don't really like posting anything even close to specifics on the internet myself, so I don't expect you to either. Thanks for any help you guys can lend me.

Re: Eastern Nebraska
I have never deer hunted Nebraska but have turkey hunted in the southeast part of the state. Was a fair amount of public ground and looked to be prime habitat for deer. We got on the DNR (or whatever government entity) website and looked for public land and also printed off maps. Then went and checked out the areas. Good luck!

Re: Eastern Nebraska
I have traveled to hunt NE since 2013, and I hunt in the Northeastern part of the state. Due to my pickiness, I have yet to shoot a buck there, but the NE part of the state offers some exceptional hunting. On the properties I hunt, there is always a number of mature bucks, and a good number of deer in general. The one downside to the whole eastern side of the state is public land isn't what I would call abundant. The little amount of public land that there is gets absolutely pounded from what I have heard/seen. I started off with a small piece I had permission on because of family ties, and after a couple of years of additional door knocking, I now have permission on over 1,000 acres. Granted, I'm the only one bowhunting all of it, but others are allowed to rifle hunt, so I don't really focus much time down there after gun season. But if you're willing to knock on some doors, I have no doubt you can get on some good land. Hope that helps in some way!

Re: Eastern Nebraska
I would stick with public. I don't like my ability to hunt an area to be someone else's decision (which can change on a whim).
Find which part of the state has the type of public you like. Good public don't grow on trees. the quality of the ground trumps the quality of the region for me personally.

Re: Eastern Nebraska
One thing you might try is sending an email to Indian Cave State Park. Every so often they open the area to bow hunting and the habitat is phenomenal. I have no doubts there are some giants in there.
