The end of a pursuit

Unread postby DaveT1963 » Fri Nov 18, 2016 5:06 am

I found Crabby dead this morning lying in his bed 25 yards from a stand I had prepped and was getting ready to hunt with the NE wind we are expecting tomorrow.

I went in this morning and hunted a ground blind that is located downwind of a nice scrape he used occassionally. I finally started getting some pics of him and was going to hunt his bed Tomorrow morning after our wind finally changes. 30 minutes before daylight I had a large deer come in and work the scrape.... with the still lingering bright moon it was easy to see he was a big buck but it was too early to legally shoot.

After Daybreak, I kept seeing a bunch of buzzards flying rather low about three hundred yards to the west of me. At 8:30 I'd had enough and I went over to investigate and that is where I found him dead in his bed from a gunshot wound right behind the shoulder. I was a little irratated as this deer was hit rather well and I'm sure did not travel far.

I had invested a lot of time and effort on Crabby and had finally nailed his preferred bedding down.

He was as best I could tell a 3.5-4.5 years old ten point. His right side was busted off just post the G2 but other then that he looked healthy. He would have been a great buck next year and the year after. Hate that he went this way.

I know there is another good buck in the area but I will probably leave this alone until next year.

Hopefully Stickers is still around and that is where I am heading.

Sorry it had to end that way. I've been following your journal and have been expecting a post in the kill zone about Crabby or Stickers. This isn't how I expected it to go down. I feel your pain and I'm pulling for you. There's a lot of season left. Hope you find Stickers.

Wow, long tines on that one. Looks like a great shot, can't imagine how someone was unable to track him.

Wow that's terrible. Is gun season going on right now or did someone pouch him? Regardless whoever pulled the trigger didn't look that hard.

Thats annoying. I know its not my right to assume, but I mean I feel like after a gun shot wound like that, that deer must not have gone far. IDK. seems a little odd that the deer died and was not recovered. seems to me like he could have been poached.

Yep muzzleloader just finished and gun is on. Im trying real hard not to be to judgemental but I personally believe whoever shot him didn't spend much time or effort looking.

But there is hopefully still Stickers left and that is where Im heading tomorrow.

Like I said the shame is this was an outstanding young buck that deserved a better fate..... he was a joy to match wits with and I feel I was getting close.... well I know my one stand was lol. I just found him last year at end of season didn't get to hunt him much. It's all part of the hunting experience. When you focus on one or two specific animals is kind of weird but they get to be more then just a target.... at least for me they do.

Note on to Stickers..... I have a N wind to catch tomorrow

I feel your pain. I was there last year with my number one target, but I did not have a good fall back option.

Good luck with Stickers!
