clear cuts
How many years do you guys believe a clear cut is productive for drawing deer to? I am referring to the ones in both northern MN and Wisconsin. I hunted a huge piece in Wisconsin this past weekend that had been cleared last year and already this year seemed to be pulling many deer in to feed. The new poople growth was already 3 to 4 feet tall. With heavy deer traffic surrounding it. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts on this. Thanks!

Re: clear cuts
You can sometimes get 15+ years out of them, sometimes depending on the other terrain in the area they just never go bad. If there is a swamp in mix or a hill country bedding point just keep on hunting that area until the sign tells you otherwise. In cases without those kind of bedding features you can still see 10 to 15 years of productive use before the trees get too big and block out the sunlight, then everything thins out a bit and all that thick cover and food kind of fades away slowly. It also depends on what is growing there, if they spray the area (kill everything) and then plant a lot of times that clearcut can go bad quickly, its not thick enough to hold good bedding or food and the deer just won't use it as much. They still travel through the area but you won't see as much sign, it's best to always keep tabs on the different clearcuts because they are not all created equal.
