Buck clicking....have you ever heard it?
I heard a buck clicking tonight for the first time so have been researching this.
Did some searching on YouTube and came across this video by our very own Sam Potter.
This is exactly what I heard.

Why do they do this and is this vocalization only done by mature bucks?
Seems like they do it when they get frustrated while tending a hot doe.

I have heard it a few times over the years.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Here is another very cool video. The long drawn out grunting/clicking while chasing at the end of this video at the 3:00 minute mark is what the buck I heard tonight was doing. More like a growl followed by clicking.

I've heard it. Like you said it seems to be when tending a doe. That's when I've heard it.

I've heard it quite a few times over the years. It is definitely one of my favorites. I'll often couple a clicking grunt with a snort wheeze when calling one from a distance. Both calls indicate the buck is highly worked up.

Re: Buck clicking....have you ever heard it?
I just heard a buck do this. I had a doe and fawn bedded on the hill side behind me and the buck was making that noise walking down the bench that was 30yds below. I could hear him from a long ways off. It went on for 5 mins. Couldn't figure out what it was until I spotted him. As soon as he seen the doe he started doing short grunts. It was a very cool experience. First time for me hearing anything like that.

Hey, I know that guy! I've only ever heard it once while hunting. I wouldn't assume every buck that does it is mature though; the one in the video only looks to be a two year old. I will say that when I did hear this vocalization it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. A very different sound but no mistaking it either.

Re: Buck clicking....have you ever heard it?
I'm not sure who read my article from this year's buck but he clicked a ton. I've heard it here and there a couple times in all my years prior but the buck I got this year clicked 20 to 30 times as it was getting light till after light in the field it was dead calm I could hear it from a long ways. I even questioned myself on the noise till he came by doing it.

I've heard it quite a few times the last few days, more than I've ever heard it before.

Re: Buck clicking....have you ever heard it?
I think I have heard this before without grunting so never really associated it with a buck. Really cool for sure.

Anyone know a good way to reproduce the sound? I've never seen a call geared towards the sound, but it seems like it could be effective in the right situation.

Go where none other dare to go, and there you'll find success.

I heard a buck doing this years ago . Another form of grunting. I have a HS true talker grunt call that I can manage to make the click sounds with.
