Seeking advice

Unread postby Eddiegomes83 » Mon Nov 07, 2016 12:37 pm

So today i went back out to the wma that i got drawn to hunt next weekend. Some things to point out before i get into what i need help with, the roads are all closed to vehicles until the day before the hunt for that particular quoto. At this point the rd has been closed 7 days and only accessible by foot or bike. Now with what happen. I was biking out close to dark when i came upon this pond next to the main rd and seen a giant standing next to some brush in the middle of the sage pond. He was startled or anything and appeared as if he just got up from bed. I watched him from about 100yds away or so with binoculars and he only took a few steps and slowly bedded back down. I have a feeling he beds there all the time. I am just wondering if he will stop bedding there once traffic starts on that rd again. Anybody have something similar happen to them? Out did it play out? Should i bother hunting him? I am on a couple good bedding spots but he is the first i laid eyes on and i cant see the other bedding spots holding a buck much better than him. Also would it be worth me driving out there Friday night before the hunt saturday and see if i can glass him getting out of his bed again and then decide to hunt him the next day if he does? Also i am not that confident hunting beds in the morning. I feel that bigger bucks are there before light? What are your guy's thoughts?

I think you're on the right track. I would absolutely hunt him there the first afternoon you have a chance to.

He probably beds there to watch the road or he has a doe. I see lots of does use those flag ponds and they can be super hot this time of year. Did you look for his track crossing that rd. Might be a good place to set for a morning hunt

I would bet he don't leave it even when people start driving down the RD unless someone comes right passed him.

I recently found a 10 pointer bedding 75 yards off the road on the edge of a marshy area. 30 yards from a field edge. I wonder how many times he has watches hunter walk right by him them slips out the back door.

Hit him the first night possible!

Thanks guys. It gives me a lot more confidence hearing all this. I think will definitely set up on him first day. If it fails first day i can hit my other spots up the next 2. As far as seeing his tracks cross the road, it is hard because the rd is limerock and the sides are grass.

Hopefully he beds there regularly. He may have a pretty big inventory of similar spots he beds like that within the area or he may just have that one.

I shot a big buck years ago in a very similar situation except it wasn't a driving road it was an equestrian trail and the main hunter access he was bedded only 100 yards from. I watched him stand there and watch hunters leaving the woods just before dark before I shot him.
