Last hunt of the year....help me decide

Unread postby Tufrthnails » Sat Dec 19, 2015 6:05 am

Here's the deal I have a choice. I can only do one

A. go back up to KY and try to fill my Buck and Doe tag I have left.

B. go on the Island hunt I typically do every year in FL on St Vincents Isl.

A. Pros- Another chance to tag a good target I know is still around.
I could save some money since I will only have to pay for food and gas.
Chance to run a couple of trap lines for yotes with my cousin.
Don't have to burn any vacation time
A. Cons- Long range forcast has lower temps and rain for the week I can be there. (I can do cold or rain, but not both)
Another 12hr drive there and back

B. Pros- The Island hunt is Muzzleloader and I did not get a chance to hunt Muzzleloader this year
Shorter drive only 5 hours
I get to freshwater and saltwater fish during down time
Can shoot hogs if I choose to
B. Cons- Will end up costing me about twice what a trip back to KY will
Don't have a hunting partner to go with this year
Odds of of bagging a deer are not near as good
Bag limit is one deer and only a 50% chance of getting drawn for antlerless option
I have to burn three days of vacation time

Go to ky and figure out the food. If the temp drops they should get up early.

I drew the sambar hunt and ran out of vacation time. Bummer. Used to many on kid sick days.

You live in florida. Fishing is good all the time. Go kill that big buck.

If lucky you could get snow and track. Plus you can gain more Intel for next year's trip.

Man you are lucky........sort of. I have put in for Sambar every year for 8 years now and never got drawn. Of the 5 times I have hunted the Island only once have I not seen a Sambar.

Oh and fishing is good until it's not in FL and that is usually when I have a day off!

I have that same luck fishing. My buddy is a guide in the Tampa bay area and every time I go over there I bring a cold front or an east wind

Just talked with the wife last night. Back to KY it is. Getting pretty excited. Been hearing some rutting activity is starting to pick up again with the younger bucks in the area hoping to get into that second rut with the cold weather.
