Deer vs turkey interest here?

Unread postby johndeere506 » Wed Dec 16, 2015 1:45 pm

My interest is a 10 of 10 for bucks here in MI. It's about a 2 out of 10 interest for turkey here. They are a nuisance here almost, some days they really are. I shot my first w my bow, 11 inch beard. Didn't do it for me.

How do you guys rate bucks vs Tom's in your interest on a scale of 1 to 10? Always been curious, I feel like the odd man here.

If i had to chose i would pick bowhunting for deer over turkeys but seeing that theyre during different times of the year i can enjoy both. :)

Ive had more success with turkeys, but maybe thats why deer hunting is always on my mind, im always looking to improve at it...

Deer 10/10
Turkey 9/10

I love Turkey hunting in the spring just has much has deer hunting in fall so 10-10 for both. Alot less people Turkey hunt so practically no pressure where I hunt and landowners have given me permission to Turkey hunt but no way in heck for deer.

I'm right with you John, I've vowed to myself to never go turkey hunting again. In the past I'd buy a tag and make myself go but I have zero enjoyment in it, this year's I'll have a few more weeks of scouting.

I love doing both. But I can usually kill a good gobbler in a day or 2. They r not very difficult to hunt. I also have great land to hunt. As stated above people will let me turkey hunt places I cant deer hunt. I still hit the public alot of yrs also.

Deer 10-10
Turkey 8-10

Turkey is a different kind of hunting for me. I don't sit in one spot motionless waiting. Instead, I scout the woods and look for mushrooms while carrying a 12 gauge. It's great and I usually bag a good Tom each year.

If it was deer vs turkey, I'd pick turkey. Mature bucks vs. turkey, I pick mature bucks. Honestly I pick wing shooting over simple deer/immature buck hunting. There is something super rewarding/challenging about chasing mature whitetails.

All deer for me. I gave up spring turkey about 5 years ago. As soon as the bow season ends I jump right into post season scouting and that takes me right into late April. Then it's time to catch up on projects at home and if I have free time hook the boat up and do some spring fishing. I carry a fall turkey tag every year just in case I happen to come across one but usually don't go out of my way to find them.

I actually went scouting a couple years ago and realized when I got to the woods it was turkey season.

I'm right there with a few of you guys.

If I had to choose, I'd go with mature bucks with a bow, it's a far greater challenge to me. However, I don't have to choose, so I hunt Spring Turkeys too.

I mostly just take other guys out though now. Took my 14 year old cousin out this past Spring for his first ever turkey hunt. We ended up cutting it short because I ended up getting violently ill and we never got out again, but we still had fun. He didn't want to wake up early though, so we ended up pinned down by this hen as day was breaking. I had roosted these birds the night before and wanted to be closer to where they came through, but 3am is rough for a teenager I guess. lol Walker still had fun.

Here's some of the ones I've called in for myself and friends/family.

turkey means nothing to me. i love the taste of them and have killed many in the fall and even called in a spring bird just to see what all the fuss was about. i honestly do not understand why it is loved by so many but to each their own.

Turkey almost comes out on top for me just because I have more time available for turkey hunting in the spring than I do for deer hunting in the fall. Plus, three year old birds are a lot easier to kill than three year old bucks around these parts!

No comparison for me. All deer. Killed more birds with my bow hunting for deer than I have with a shotgun in the springtime.
