Leaving your gear in the tree
I was out tonight and when it came time to leave. I left my bow, jacket, and ext. in my stand. I do this often, only when I'll be back in morning. I was just wondering if any one has done this? It is in public land.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
I have never done this. I never want to be separated from my bow. You never know when you may need it going to or coming from.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Most public I hunt it's illegal to leave anything out overnight.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
I've left my stand in situations I knew I'd be right back in there in the morning. I have never left my bow, however, and probably never would. For me, it's too expensive a peace of equipment to ever risk anything happening to it out in the woods overnight... public or private. And if for some reason conditions were to change over night and it was best to not hunt that same spot, the last thing I'd want to have to do would be go all the way in just to get my bow the next morning and then have to get to another spot also. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
I've never done this either. Although I have hunted with guys who regularly did it if they were going back in to hunt the stand the next morning. I don't ever remember them ever having any issues while doing it but there sure are risks involved. I was just never wild about the possibility of climbing up in the stand the next morning with my bow and arrows completely covered with a solid layer of ice. Puts you in a bad position if something happens real early.

Not on purpose lol.
Packed up on the first hunt this year and walked the mile and a half back out.... And forgot it. Had to go back the next AM lol

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
once in a great while... Usually I have no intentions of hunting the same tree, so why leave it out... Sometimes on rut hunts I hunt a spot in the evening I could see leaving the stand there for the AM if there was something around I was interested in, but usually I am just passing thru...

Yeah I leave my Climber and pack out plenty of times here in FL, but I never leave my bow. I have killed to many deer walking in to my stand. Twice I have shot does under my stand walking in. shot a few deer walking out as well.

Re: Leaving your gear in the tree
Here's a lesson I'll never forget.
I was hunting a spot I'd never been in before and it was the first half of Nov. While I was setting up a shooter walked right under me (bow was still on the ground)
I sat the rest of the day and the spot seemed good so I decided to duck out a little early to find a good exit/entrance. Since I was coming back in the morning I left all of my gear in the tree.
On my way out a big buck heard me walking and must have assumed I was another buck coming for his doe that was behind him. He walked straight to me stiff legged and ears pinned. I could have shot him at 10 yards.... If my bow wasn't 20 feet up a maple!
Lesson learned

I do it. Usually take the bow with me for the above mentioned reasons.

I never do. You never know what might change unexpectedly and then your stuff may be sitting out there for a day or longer.
