anything new in deer hunting?

Unread postby mheichelbech » Thu Aug 06, 2015 1:00 pm

Whitetail deer hunting is obviously practically infinite in its possibility of different occurrences however with regard to consistently useful and practical tactics, has anything new been discovered? The only thing I can think of that comes close is Ozonics and even that is debatable. I was thinking of this with respect to what can I do differently that I don't already know (other than additional experience) or have read about (here mostly)t and I drew a total blank.

Because "hunters" are very gullible crowd there were always been new gimmicks in the hunting world. Money talks and there is a lot to go around (not from me though).

The cellular cameras. Although not fully developed or glitch free, I believe soon they will be the new age of cameras. No more D cell batteries or phone book size cameras.

I have 2 Covert Code Blacks. Love them. Real time information is great. My buddy has one also. He was getting night time pictures of a nice 10 point last year. All of a sudden in early October he got early evenings picks of him with a south wind. He used that info to kill that deer 3 days later on the next South wind.

I would like to see ultra small cameras with real time feeds. A thumb tack size camera with live stream. Thieves would have a heck of time with those. 20 years from now who knows what will be the bomb. Just look back 20 years.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I can see this as well.

Another fairly recent thing is the hunting knowledge base that is readily available via the internet. This wasn't the case 10+ years ago. Reading this website as well as a few others will IMO increase someone's odds of success much more than any new gadget.

Its not the big things you do... Its a lot of small things that make you more successfull.

Similarly, for me or hunters I know, it has been just doing the things that are already know....actually playing the wind...taking the long way around for a good entry/exit, etc. I think it is practiced much less than it is talked about.

I wonder with all the technology and vast information available if hunting public is going to get increasingly harder because everyone is looking for the same stuff, like if you put guys on this website on the same public ground I picture everyone showing up to the same spots to scout

I saw a commercial last night for a plastic fence system to "steer" the deer to your treestand. It was basically green snow fence. It was the first time all year I had watch outdoor television, I promptly turned it off.

The use of drones for scouting is still relatively gray as it is legal to observe wildlife from a drone (unless protected), assess agriculture/habitat, etc...even though scouting is called out as illegal, it is only currently illegal when directly linked to hunting.

Reminds me of the illegality of scouting FCL. You need to be "hunting coyotes" to walk it during the off season.

As much as I hate em, I'll likely end up buying one someday...
