Seeking or chasing?

Unread postby mheichelbech » Sat Aug 01, 2015 12:44 am

What's the easier phase to hunt for you...the seeking phase, the chasing phase or a overlap between the 2? If you were scheduling a week off, would it be end of October , first week of November or a little of both?

I like the last week of October and the first 4 or 5 days of November. The bucks are cruising and not really with the does yet. You'll get different opinions. Everyone has their favorite times.

X2

I like the chase phase. Get one hot doe in the vicinity and the buck action explodes.

I remember following your hunt last year when you shot your buck...I don't think there could be any more of a buck action explosion than that!

If you know your bucks well, earlier.

If you don't, later.

Agreed.

I love the last 10 days of October. Its my favorite time to go after a big buck.

There is undoubtedly the potential for more action when the bucks are chasing but its way less consistent. I am in the game every hunt at the end of October.

I kind of think there is really no comparison. late October before the bucks get tied up with does. If you are after buck quality. If you are after buck quantity 2nd & 3d week November is better. If there is no gun season I like the last week of November. Love hunting Thanksgiving day.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Where I hunt here in SW Wisconsin, I see a lot of action for bucks the first week of November, but I see way better quality bucks around the Nov 9th- 12th for whatever reason...

I hunt sw wisconsin that time.and usually I get to hunt that entire time frame.so I would say the last week of october.I would pick searching over chasing every time. Glad I don't usually have to choose.to be exact though I like the last 3 or 4 days of october

Last October 30th, I was in an area where one of the first hot does came into heat. I saw 4 bucks that afternoon, a 140", a 130", a 120", and another that I couldn't make out but the fact that I could see antler through the brush lead me to believe it wasn't terribly small. I want to be in the woods when those first does come in, and it seems like that is the last week of October where I hunt. Also, the pressure really picks up in my area from 11/1-11/15. If I get out the last week of October, I feel like I have good buck action AND less hunters to deal with. I still hunt in early Nov., too...but after a few years of experience in my area, I'm high on late October.

My favorite time to hunt is the seeking phase. I love catching those midday bucks cruising for does. They're easier to call in as well. Chasing is fun and offers a lot of excitement but it is too erratic and I find myself rushing my shots during the chasing phase. I also really like when the bucks are locked down, or when the does that weren't bred come back into estrous. Still love the chasing phase though!
