taking down stand and sticks before dark?

Unread postby Bowhunting Brian » Mon Nov 03, 2014 11:39 am

am I the only one who takes down my stand and sticks before it gets dark out?  I just don't want to attempt it in the dark for safety reasons.

I wait until it's dark. I use a headlamp which helps a lot.

When i can't see the twigs and limbs for a clean shot i start packing up. There is usually enough light to get down and then use my flashlight.

Head lamp and lineman's belt. Can't give up that last ten minutes of light, too may times it has been critical, especially early season.

Exactly-in the woods its darker than a field edge so Im usually out before pitch black but I do use a lonewolf strap as a linemans belt and a headlamp

Not at all... safety comes first. I always hook up my linesmans belt before taking the stand and first couple sticks down.

Once it's closing time I let my bow down, attach my lineman belt and take everything down to pack up. Done it enough times I don't even need a light although tonight the bright moon was nice.

The last minutes of legal light are crucial and should be taken advantage of to the fullest.

That being said I would recommend, as others have, lineman belt and a headlamp if needed..

Your not the only one. I take my safety before getting a deer. It all depends with me - if I cant feel my fingers and hands I try to get down when I still can see my climbing sticks.

I think you are thinking too much into it. The first time I ever hunted with my LW sticks I set up in the morning before firstlight. I always come down after dark and have never used any kind of light. Just be confident in yourself and your gear and you will be fine.

I'm in the headlamp and linemans belt camp. I wait until the end of legal shooting hours or when I can no longer see my pins, whichever comes first. By the time I tear down and walk out its usually always pitch dark. If you're worried about safety, I'd say practice at home. If you're worried about getting lost, invest in a good GPS unit and a compass. If you're having worries about walking out in the dark, get a good flashlight, go slow and a sidearm never hurt a guy's confidence either.

I come down in the dark pack up and then get out the light to walk sometimes, I always have done it that way and old guy I hunted with yelled at me every night about not having a light on when walking so I try to use it some more now
