High Winds in WI tomorrow
How do you plan on hunting the 30-40 mph gusts? I like some wind but that's gonna be a tough day on stand. I have seen many good bucks on days like this but usually a little later. Taking a longer shot is extremely hard in wind like that so very close range is a must.
I was planning on starting my all day sits tomorrow but thinking I may wait another day. I'm gonna be hunting the ground in thicker bedding areas in afternoon instead.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
I took off of work tomorrow hoping to sit all day. I gained access early this fall to a piece that is mostly pines so I'm thinking I'll be in my ground blind in the pines most of the day to try and evade some of the wind.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
I skipped a day in the stand about 5 years ago on a +35 mph wind day. Well just so happens that one of the biggest bucks I have ever had on camera walked by my stand at 3:00 that day! I sit these days now (at least during the rut).

10-15 mph wind out of the north for my area tomorrow. 30 mph gusts tonight pushing in the cold air.

I plan on crawling into a big willow tree off the edge if a balsom swamp. I've only hunted the stand a few times in the past, thinking they'll be held up in the swamp taking cover from the conditions.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
I am ticked that I have not laid eyes on a buck yet on my main area. Very little sign too and no big deer sign except one or two tracks I have found. My plan is to dive in a sneek up on every know bedding spot that I know on this property and use the wind and noise to get in super close. When close and ready I am going to do some soft grunts, louder grunts, then snort wheeze. If nothing stands up I am walking right in to try and jump anything in there. Its time to get aggressive and bump some deer so I at least know where they are bedding because I have no clue at this point. My lack of scouting last spring and the major ditch cleaning done in this area have made it tough. Deer are in different spots since the clearing.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
morning sit is out for me.. work..grrrr, but i'm still going to play hoookie late AM for a little scouting and locate a good AM spot for Saturday (find me some fresh poop), then sit friday afternoon, winds are going to die and its going to be cold Saturday morning, i want to be sure to be in the right spot to catch them coming back after the evening foray ...might sit all day Saturday, maybe scout a little and adjust to the wind, not sure... where i plan on going i got some acres to play with.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
From NWS..........
...A BRIEF PREVIEW OF WINTRY WEATHER EXPECTED TONIGHT...
AN INTENSE UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE
AREA TONIGHT. MUCH COLDER AIR WILL SURGE INTO THE AREA AS THE
DISTURBANCE PASSES THROUGH. THE SHARPLY COLDER TEMPERATURES...
COMBINED WITH STRONG NORTH WINDS AND SNOW SHOWERS...WILL PRODUCE
A BRIEF PERIOD OF WINTRY CONDITIONS...ESPECIALLY OVER NORTHERN AND
EASTERN WISCONSIN.
RAIN SHOWERS ACCOMPANYING THE DISTURBANCE WILL CHANGE TO SNOW WITH
THE ARRIVAL OF THE COLDER AIR. THIS CHANGEOVER WILL OCCUR IN
FAR NORTHERN WISCONSIN BY MID-EVENING...AND OVER EAST CENTRAL
WISCONSIN SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT. ALTHOUGH BRIEF HEAVY SNOW
SHOWERS ARE POSSIBLE IN NORTHERN AND EASTERN WISCONSIN LATER
THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT...THEY ARE MOST LIKELY OVER VILAS
COUNTY...WHERE LAKE ENHANCEMENT WILL OCCUR. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF
2 TO 4 INCHES ARE LIKELY IN VILAS COUNTY...WITH AROUND AN INCH
OVER MUCH OF NORTHEAST WISCONSIN. TRAVEL CONDITIONS COULD BECOME
HAZARDOUS LATE TONIGHT INTO EARLY FRIDAY...ESPECIALLY OVER NORTH
CENTRAL WISCONSIN.
VERY WINDY WEATHER IS EXPECTED LATE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY...WITH
THE STRONGEST WINDS OCCURRING OVER THE EASTERN FOX VALLEY AND
LAKESHORE AREAS. WIND GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED ACROSS
MOST OF THE AREA...WITH 40 TO 50 MPH GUSTS NEAR THE LAKE AND BAY.
LOCALLY STRONGER WIND GUSTS ARE POSSIBLE OVER NORTHERN DOOR
COUNTY. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES
DIFFICULT AND CAN CAUSE MINOR TREE AND POWER LINE DAMAGE.
MOST PEOPLE WILL ALSO WANT TO FIND THEIR WINTER COAT...HAT...AND
GLOVES OR MITTENS BEFORE VENTURING OUTDOORS FRIDAY MORNING...AS
WIND CHILL READINGS ARE FORECAST TO DROP INTO THE TEENS TO LOWER
20S. WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN TO SLOWLY DIMINISH LATE FRIDAY
AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...IT WILL STILL BE QUITE WINDY AND VERY CHILLY
FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS IN EASTERN WISCONSIN.

Re: High Winds in WI tomorrow
I have a day off....good inch to almost two inches of snow on the ground. 10-15 mile an hour winds with mph increasing as day goes on.
Temp is upper 20s but feels like teens with wind chill.
Stay warm guys, don't get wet today, could be dangerous.
I'm heading out in an hour.
