Everything I have learned from hunting is from my experience no one in my family hunts! I thought I was in a perfect spot for the deer to come close didnt work out that way......I'm still learning like. I think I said. I have only been hunting 6 years and the first 1-2 weren't much on a normal hunt most of my stands 30 yards is all your shooting anything over is impossible

When you do shoot another 75 yds or so maybe next time you will hit forward....maybe in the ear.....or jaw....(insert sarcasm) just as long as its dead. It dont matter.

Congrats again on the buck.

Just curious as to why you would do it again? People have pointed time and time again that accuracy isn't the issue at that distance. You can be spot on but the time that the deer has to move is the kicker.

How often are deer just standing still......calmly? That's the point people are trying to make. The time the animal had to move even if he's not reacting to the shot.

I agree it's a risky shot past 40 and I would not recommend any one taking that shot! However when I took that shot at 65 yards everything was in my favor! The buck was paying attention to a bedded down hot doe and the field was being picked so all the noise from the machines was covering any potential for the buck to hear my bow and jump the string! And I was shooting up to 100 yards everyday for about an hour so I was very confident with that shot! But this year I won't shoot anything past 35 yards because I have not shot my bow much And I m not comfortable shooting this year! So every one should kinda make their own limits and if it becomes a mistake learn from it and don't do it again but if it works DO it again!

Yeah, the OP would have been ripped to shreds. The Beast has a much more docile following. On the Beast everyone is here to learn and teach about all aspects of buck hunting.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Guys that hunt antelope, elk, muleys and whitetails in the west take shots like that all the time..............If you are confident in your ability then I see no reason to say it was a risky shot, deer duck at 20 yards just as easily, so saying that is a risky shot is like saying any bow shot is risky, which it is. If you practice out to a hundred yards and can consistently put 10 out of 10 arrows in a pie plate at that range why worry what others think about your choices? Congrats on a great Mi. buck!

I was trying to avoid posting on this thread, but it's gone on long enough I can't help it.
Congrats on a fine deer and an awesome hunt.

If you didn't learn from what happened and take that shot again you will almost certainly get burned. And I think you know that. That being said it makes it an unethical shot because you aren't that good at that distance if you are hitting deer in the rump.

Load up a 10 of 10 video, that would be awesome! How many archers could do that here on the HB?

Hey buddy, nice buck!

The shot would have been "more ethical" if the deer were not alert to your presence. That being said, sometimes when hunting the instinct kicks in and we make shots that afterwards we cant even remember what pin we used etc!

If your bow is quiet, I believe farther shots are sometimes less risky than shots in the 20-35 yard range, where the deer is close enough to hear your shot but far enough away to have more time to react. I have shot deer at 50yds unaware of my presence and they did not hear a thing or react. With todays modern equipment long shots are very possible with a quiet bow and a heavier arrow.
