Scrape Checkin' Video

Unread postby Mario » Sun Nov 17, 2013 2:56 pm

I wanted to post this an encounter I had with a buck on November 4th this year. I have been playing around with setting up on the wind tunnel. In this particular case as I entered this spot I found a large fresh scrape out off the plateau I was going to set-up on. There was a south west wind, and in hind sight I should have been a little further up on the ridge and possibly ahead of the scrape. I was high enough where I could see my milk weeds rising over the floor where the scrape was located. This was a morning encounter so I presume the sun was heating up the lows and my thermals were rising up the draw.

Now he is obviously a immature buck but it was cool to watch how he navigated the ridge and checked the area.

If you guys had this same scrape location, same ridge terrain, and same wind:

Which direction would you accept the deer to come from?

Where would you have placed your set-up?

Any other comments?

Nice clip
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I definitely cannot help on the setup question but I have to say I love the video. Watching him with that little branch above the scape was interesting to see.

Yeah if you watch the video closely you will see that this small buck uses every scent gland to make his mark on the scrape

1. pre-orbital gland on the stick above
2. the inter-digital gland by hooving at the ground within the scrape
3. both the meta-tarsal and tarsal gland by peeing down his leg which runs across both these glands onto the ground within the scrape
