Halloween funnel hunt shared with a wolf

Unread postby wibow » Fri Nov 01, 2013 5:56 am

About 2 yrs ago I had 2 shooter non typical bucks come thru a funnel along one of the rivers I hunt. Got busted by a grunt call that was above my head still moving as the wind suddenly stopped. Nothing seen last year on my sits in there. Waiting for the right wind I headed in there this morning and set up. At first light I see movement at 35yds crossing a beaver dam off an island heading to shoreline. At first I thought doe, then realize its a fawn colored wolf! He slipped in the wood line and headed thru the funnel in the same direction my bucks usually cruise thru. Needless to say it was awesome and crappy at the same time as I knew my hunt that morning was probably over unless they would have booted downwind of him. Sat til 10am and headed out. Seen a nice sized super fresh scrape opened up about 20yds from my tree heading out so that was cool. I guess the wolf and I had the same idea and hunting spot today! Happy Halloween!

Should have hung it out, sounds like fresh sign in the area and a lone wolf isn't much threat to a mature deer. Gone many hunts and have seen deer within minutes to hours of wolves passing by.

Would've loved to but keeping the wife happy, taking the kids out trick or treating and scaring the neighborhood children! Been slow up here in the NW part of the state, things are just starting to pick up.

Dang-- being from TN all I have to "worry" about are poisonous snakes, and occasionally a black bear run in.

You guys sneaking into the woods way before sunrise, knowing there are wolves in the area.....yeah that's a post that needs to be under the do people think you're crazy thread!!

Wolves are the barometer of the welfare of a habitat...an adult alpha male can scent mark up to a 500 sq mile area they call their territory. The more wolves there are, obviously the more food is available to them. Guess I don't get this blind fear of bears and wolves in the state of WI. These aren't grizzlies and unless your seriously wounded and surrounded by a pack they are way more afraid of us period. I've spent over 3 decades running around in the deep dark woods from PA to WI and have never feared an animal or had one try to attack me. You can keep those poisonous snakes down south though brother! Lol

I'd be much more concerned about poisonous snakes than I would be a wolf or bear. I don't think twice about going or coming out in the dark.....in wisconsins north woods

Same here, I jump bears all the time hunting and spring scouting. Wolf tracks all over the place most places I hunt, no big deal walking in or out in the dark but that darn 24 inch garter snake in my yard freaks me out.

You can read about the boy in MN who wasn't afraid of wolves either.

About 10 years ago I was followed out by a pack of wolves after a late season hunt in Vilas county. I won't lie I was a little nervous but they never showed any aggression and only seemed curious more than anything. I was sure glad to get back to my truck and then they just disappeared.

I carry at all times now so next time I will feel a little less vulnerable.

Last paragraph of that story sums that up... "Not characteristic of a lone wolf."
