Anyone Else Struggling?
Usually the early season is my time to shine, that is not the case this year. I hunt all public in SE WI and have not been seeing much of anything for deer or sign. I have bounced all over the place looking for a good deer and have seen two dink bucks and a doe in 15 sits. A lot of the places I have gone are via canoe or long walks back so I know there is a good chance the area hasn’t been disturbed (I have only cut one boot track near any of my stand locations). Even on way back to the truck in the dark I am not bumping deer. What are you guys experiencing? Are the acorns hot? Corn, beans…??

Re: Anyone Else Struggling?
In the bigwoods I'm hunting, acorns and maple leaves continue to be good draws for deer. Red oak acorns, primarily as the few acorns my white oaks dropped were seemingly gone in a hurry. Lots of deer in the red oaks right before dark here...
Keep plugging- it only takes one hunt to change your entire season around.

I like that thinking. I use it ALOT when the season is wearing me down.

I've hunted quite a bit this early season, have seen six bucks, only one shooter. You only have to guess right once. Constantly place yourself in good situations and eventually good things will happen.

Keep at it. Hunt fresh sets over fresh sign. Good things will happen.

Re: Anyone Else Struggling?
Early season has always been rough on me, hunted hard the first two weeks but no luck. Now is when I start to get excited, leaves are falling, patterns are changing and most important the pressure has been ramped up a notch. My better spots usually need some pressure before the bucks move in.

I completely agree and have had a seasons like the one I am having now in the past and shot a decent buck. I wont be able to get out for a week or so (my wife is due Friday) but I have 5 weeks off for parental leave! So once the little guy comes, dad will have to go find a big buck so he can put food on the table.

Constant re evaluation of what you are doing and scout out then hunt fresh sign.

What exactly do you mean by "fresh sign"?

If you don't have a good track catch, look for fresh droppings in a staging/feeding area.
