What is a safe distance to cross a buck bed from up wind
I have a spot I want to hunt on Monday because the wind is supposed to be perfect but the only way I can get in position is to cross up wind of the bedding area. How far is a safe distance to do that? I imagine wind speed would have an effect. The bed is about 200 yards into the cattails from the transition line.

I was over 400 yards away two weeks ago watched him get up and run off out of a crap field. I think it depends on the buck though.

A very long distance. Several hundred yards isn't enough.

I can get quite a bit farther out the only thing I'm worried about is that at around 250 yards there is a goat path that all the other hunter use so there is a good chance someone else will cross though at that distance. I would hate to go a mile out of my way just to have some other hunter blow it for me but I guess that's the game that needs to be played.

Chances are if there is a hunter/walking trail at 250 yards that buck smells people coming an going all the time. My guess is he is alerted by the smell the quickly calms down unless the people are getting close to where he beds or if the smell doesn't go away. He is bedding there for a reason and the advantages it creates. Can you get in there on a slightly off wind or maybe use te same trail everyone else does and then break off towards the kill tree?

X2 Take the "goat path"... They are used to hunters walking there. Also, going across the wind stream fast and early will help a lot. If you go across say noon or 1pm, he is a lot more likely to be in a groggy half asleep state and much more likely to forget about your scent, or calm down.

If the wind works out tomorrow for that bedding area I'm heading down the goat path to victory...or not, we'll see
