Topographical terms and descriptions
After seeing several posts of people confused on topographic terms, I thought I would start a thread that outlined any and all features/terms we could think of. I think photos would be a great asset as well. I'm talking as simple as your basic funnel, to your hilltop field funnels, to hubs, and the list goes on.

I hear these terms all the time but where I am from hunters do not use these terms, I have always wanted to learn more about what these things are like funnels, benches, saddles, etc. is there a video or a read where I can learn how to indentify these features?

Buy the book "Mapping Trophy Bucks" by Brad Herndon. It's a great read and deals a lot with using a topo map and terrain features. He explains all the features your wanting to know about.

Have it and have read it a couple of times. I agree- probably the best whitetail book I've read.

Spurs are small ridges, points, or fingers that kick off the side of a main ridge.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

The 7's that they placed on the inside of each saddle are not spurs.

Look like short ridges, points or fingers off the hill top. to me. How would you describe them as?

I can see how that could appear to be the case...but those arnt ridges, points or fingers. Those are actually the contour lines describing the width, depth and shape of the saddle.
Take the pic I posted for instance. The contour lines I marked in blue are not spurs, like the 7's in the saddle above, they are contour lines describing the shape of the ridge. Hope this helps Stan.

I see what you're saying. Good point
So they would be like this? Kind of a ramp type (gradual) elevation change to the bottom of the saddle? People better understand illustrations and visual aids including myself.

I think so, the 7 on the left defines the west side of the saddle on the left and the 7 on the right defines the east side of saddle on the right.

Great thread... Realized I was wrong about a few of the terms and or made up my own name for land features.
