Tracks!!!!!!!!!!

Unread postby PredatorTC » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:16 am

Besides killing a great buck this season, my ultimate goal is to get better at tracking and identifying specific tracks. Here are some pictures of some tracks from a buck i have been watching. Its defiantly a four finger track. But what do you see about these tracks that are unique. If you saw them in a couple different places, how would you know its the same buck? What do you see that im missing?

The top two pics are of the same track and the bottom one is of a different track but the same deer.

Good post as usual, Predator. I need to get better at tracking too. I'll wait for the experts to chime in, but I will say his left toe seems to be a bit longer than the right. I think it also hooks inward a little.

That's kind of funny, Predator - but so true. Top one looks like it might have dealt with a rain at some point.

By the hooking points, by the fact that his one toe splays wider than the other, by the length and hooking of his back foot. If you study them close, there are a lot of unique characteristics.

For those who have not read it, check out my article on tracking, here is a link:

Probably the lack of defination, its not as sharply defined as the bottom pic.

Right. Although, it could just be the angle the picture was taken and the "glare" from the sun. To me, it looks like the front of the hoof (the right side) is a little splayed out and the edges look duller. Again, this might be an angle and/or sun distortion, too.

I should specify what I meant by, "Splayed out."

Not the splay between the hooks, but maybe width should have been my wordage to describe the right hook. It appears wider as if the track flattened out from rain...

Good size track forusure but hard to referance it to anything . Looks to be a heavy deer , pointed in hooves and the one on the left looks to me to be hooked in some also . I also by looking at his tracks think he is a younger buck than older buck . Hooves not rounded in any form yet neither . A few of the older bucks that I have shot had more rounded hooves from scraping. I shot one a few years ago that only had half of his hoof pads left the rest were rotted out . I think I still have pics of that I will check for this topic .

I'm not so sure that it's a real big one. The hooves look too long and narrow and pointy. The lack of dew claws in that muddy spot tells me there's not a lot of weight there.

A couple of observations on the tracks. The first being they are in soft mud, which can be deceiving somewhat due to the fact that most deer splay their hooves walking or running in soft mud. The second is that an older heavier buck tends to show dew-claws when walking - soft or semi-soft terrain. I try to find a series of tracks and look at the series for a distance to see if the pattern is repeating on soft/semi-soft terrain. Also look for buck characteristics such as being duck footed vs. pigeon toed, distance between tracks side to side (indicates chest width) and of course, distance between strides from front to back (indicating a long frame). I did notice the slight hook on the track toe right away and would try to discern a distinct characteristic on both front hooves as a sure fire identifier if you come across the tracks again. Older bucks tend to have more rounding and more chips/scars/hooks/non-symmetry in toe lengths when compared to a young buck's track. Good pics - great post!
