How do you find his bedding area?

Unread postby Sneaky » Thu Jun 03, 2010 2:10 pm

Best way to kill a big buck is to find his bedding area, right? How do you do that? Do you spot the buck, then watch him? Do you spot him and then find the nearest thick area with beds in it? Do you find it without even spotting him? What can you tell me about it?

Sneaky, I would start with buying the two videos.

On sale in the online store here.

In areas with topographical changes, follow the HIll Country DVd suggestions.

The Marsh hunting DVd can be applied to non marsh areas also.

You have to wear out the boot leather, but the DVD's sure have great suggestions for a starting point.

If you see a buck at dusk he is probably bedding close by.

I hate to sound like I'm trying to make a sale, but Zap and AC are right... It would very hard to type out how we find beds. The video's "Marsh bucks" and "Hill country" spell it out very well and in depth. Combined they are over 5 hours long. Thats a lot of typing... But as Predator said, if you tell us your terrain, I could get specific about certain aspects of finding buck beds. We use Topo's, aerials, looking for crtain features that generally have buck bedding, and we also wear out a lot of boot leather...

Hey, if you guys recommend the videos, then I'll get them.

The terrain varies greatly around here. It can be hundreds of acres of grassland with a few trees and a creek running through, or thick hardwoods with few features or a lot of features. Lots of mesquite flats with cedars. Just depends.

The public land I want to hunt is corps land around a lake and river. A lot of hardwoods and cottonwoods, with some thicker undergrowth in areas and a lot of open fields mixed in. Not a lot of features to the terrain. A few ridges, creeks, draws, etc....but not much.

Once you get both DVD's just don't watch It once but Instead watch It many times. There's so much Info there that It's tough to grasp the 1st few times watching. Every time I watch one of the DVD's I learn something again that I missed the previous dozen times.

You could do it the old-fashioned way and just bump him out of his bed - hopefully getting a look at him in the process...the Adrae way!

I would walk the river or creek bottoms where the thickest cover is.Also those cedars you described sound like excellent bedding cover. What kind of food sources are there? Agricultural?

Can you post an aerial and Topo of one of your areas and I will look at it and see if If I can find some bedding based on the maps... No promises, some areas are easier than others. You can block out town, river, and road names so no one knows where your hunting.

They do use the cedars for cover a lot. Problem is that sometimes there are so many I don't know how they use them.

Native food sources. No ag plots that I know of.

I appreciate the help, guys. I've hunted over feeders my whole life, so I've been stunted on learning their behaviors. I'm getting away from that and learning how to hunt them.

I would love to. I'm not real good with computers, but I'll see what I can come up with.

I just pulled all my hair out trying to figure that one out. I've got an arial map pulled up of an area, but I can't figure out how to copy the image to paintbrush so that I can label stuff. I can't figure out how to copy or save the image in any way. I almost threw my computer out the window over the whole ordeal.

Okay. I looked it up, and it was easier to find than I thought it would be. Man that was a lot easier. Now I just have to edit it.
